Has anyone ever attempted this cross? If so, is there any special way to do it? I imagine I would just take pollen from the male flower of one and transfer it to the female of the other right? Heres a pic of what I'm hoping to do. Not my picture obviously..

Yes, you can use zucchini pollen to pollinate a squash flower or vice versa. I use a flower from one to pollinate all fems that are open on both varieties. I've never saved any of the seeds, though. They get harvested before they get too big or the seeds become abundant and hard.

That pic just looks like summer squash C. pepo. Some varieties are colored like that. Some are striped vertically.
Here is a link for a cross compatibility chart and the site has other info.

I have a Maori pumpkin x yellow zucchini hybrid I'm working on. C. pepo x C. pepo.
Can be used for summer squash or left to mature and used as a winter squash.

I asked pops about his. He said it was a butternut and zucchini cross.
Looking at the Butternut flowers, they're identical (besides the fruit on the fems) to yellow straight-neck squash. So that cross should work and should be easy. The flowers are sturdy enough that I think you can use a clothespin to close the flower after pollination to prevent additional crossing. I saw a pic like that somewhere.
My squash flowers open early, so I usually go out around 6am to see what's open and what I can pollinate.
