First attempt at Kratky

So this year's pepper harvest will be slim to say the least due to my two very young sons thinking it would be great fun to uproot all of dad's plants early this summer. Due to that, I'm going to attempt to do an indoor Kratky grow this fall/winter. Are there any pointers or advice anyone might have for me? This is the fist time I've tried any type of hydroponics and am still a beginner gardener of any kind. I've watched YouTube videos and it seems pretty straight forward and inexpensive so I'm giving it a try. Thanks

I'm not a parent, but you could whip them with the plants they picked. As far as gardening advice...
SIPs or sub-irrigated planters are also easy and popular as a first step toward hydro.

I've watched a couple of his videos but haven't had a chance to watch them all. I've ordered the net cups and sponges that he uses for seedlings and cloning.

Believe me, they got in trouble but there is only so much you can do to a three year old and a one year old. I haven't heard of SIP's, I'll have to look into it, thanks.

I had some fun with kratky last season and easiest I found was those cheap laundry tubs with the handles. Mine was a 40ltr from memory. Drilled a hole about 5cm from the bottom. Filled the bottom with course perlite to around 7cm. On top a layer of coir matting (like they use in hanging baskets) and filled up with coco coir to an inch shy of the top. The cat really took a fancy to it so I had to cut a polystyrene lid that I put on the coir. This really helped with moisture balance as the top stayed relatively moist until I watered again which was around every second week. Crops werent great but were weeks ahead of any other plant in soil I had of the same type.

I didn't know there were different types of Kratky. I thought it was just water and nutrients in a large container with a net-pot set into the container lid.

Your description is the traditional Kratky that I have been doing for about 5 years now. There should be no media other than in the net pot.

My bad. That was my Hempy grow.

That's what I thought but I wasn't sure. Thanks

Just watched a bunch more of his videos. That JPGS was huge! So with all of the farms near by, I can get food grade, plastic 55 gallon drums for super cheap. I think next year I might have to try to copy one of his Kratky grows just for the fun of it. I picked up some maxi-gro to use as fertilizer. I'm germinating primo 7 pots and BBM seeds, also I'm trying to clone a bahamain goat and a JPGS. We will see how it turns out.
