Urfa biber

Did a search but didn't see anything about this pepper. Anyone growing it? I got it as a freebie with a recent order. I read about it and it seems like an interesting pepper. Any info on growth habit, productivity, etc? Thanks

I have grown them for a couple years ako.  Bushy 3-4' plants, nice leaf canopy, good producers.  Does well in full sun.  Got them as an extra on an order from Ford's iirc.  Taste wise it reminds me of Milah Helow (sp?) or a slightly hotter aleppo pepper.  It's not very hot, not even as hot as a serrano imo, but it's got a great earthy almost raisin-y type flavor and a gentle burn.

Really cool!  With the difficulty in getting Aleppo, Urfa's have apparently become a lot more popular in cuisine.  This year I was given pepper seeds from a woman who brought them with her from Hamadan in Iran and she considers it her home pepper.  As it grows, it looks a lot like Urfa, but I'm not sure whether they're the same or just similar.  The plants are compact, produce pretty heavily and quickly, and ripen at a pretty average rate (mine all got a late start and are in small containers).  Nice burgundy red color as they ripen, but I haven't tasted one yet.  I expect I will turn some into pepper flakes in the traditional way they do with the Urfa in Turkey, or at least as similarly as i can.

I will likely grow Urfa the next summer season and see how the two compare and also how they compare with aleppo.  Hope you give it a go!

Glad to hear more about the Urfa's and curious how you've been using the peppers.
