When to throw out frozen peppers

A friend gave me a bag of frozen peppers from last year around this time. I opened the bag and thought it smelled a bit odd but decided to cut one up and put it on my pizza.
 
The flavor seems a bit off. How much longer should I keep them? How do you know when they need to be gotten rid of? The inside of the pepper didn't look any different but the smell was weird.
 
I threw them in the trash barrel. Thanks!
 
Now lets see if the stupid dog outside has enough sense to not dig it out like he does with so many other things. It just sucks because they're reapers and I finally got some and then it's like this.
 
maybe it`s just me but i got a thing about eating "old" food. me and my wife freeze stuff all the time. we use the freezer save a meal machine thing that sucks the air out of the bag and prevents freezer burn but six months is the maximum you want to keep anything. if you dry the peppers they will keep much longer. just my 2 cents. YMMV
