2019 Hay Bale Pepper Patch

I've been a member for a while but never posted a grow log. My usual garden is too boring for that. I use 20-30 pots and overwinter my mama plants in a hillbilly winter shelter. Our ground here isn't good for in soil gardening and I've not been enthused enough to undertake the work and expense to build raised beds.

Now I have my peppers working the way I want and have the need for a much larger grow to supply a project. The main peppers I'll grow will be reaper, douglah and fatalii. For a couple of years I'll do hay bale gardens and heap tons of organic trash into the area. I have monumental amounts of pine straw, oak leaves and bonfire ash every year to dump in the walkways. I think this will do a world of good to make this new garden area mo'betta for eventual in ground growing.

I closed off a 38x38 patch in the NE field that gets full sun. This is the area I chose. The big painted guy is my fertilizer supplier.

The little painted guy is my running buddy and load inspector.

I checked the weather. Maybe low 40's for a while so eight of my row enders are moving out tomorrow. The holes are dug. I'll plant them deep and cover them with buckets at night.

After that I'll do a bunch of the largest peppers in the center row and protect with a row cover.

Edit: Wow, check this stuff out. I post about my row enders and score me a page topper.

I've been waiting for quite a while to see this.  Hay bales, row enders, page toppers, it's all coming together.  Good luck!

Yeah, it seems like this project has been dragging on forever. Soon the fun will begin.

This is trump country. Even our dirt is orange, sticky and miserable :fireball:

This is what it looks like after I fixed it to put back in the holes with the tomato plants tomorrow.

The eight row enders ready to move out to the garden. Three Amish Paste, four A Grappoli D'Inverno and a Juliet Hybrid.

The row enders planted. Not much to see. They're avoiding the sun today. Planted deep and hiding under the black pots.

The first 24 pepper plants moved out for hardening. Next stop for these is under the row cover in the garden.

Eh, I decided to plant five more peps to clean out my wagon and be ready for the next two bins to come out of the nursery in the morning for some hardening. These five I'll protect with buckets for now. I'll plant another row this weekend sometime

The maters I planted Sunday are coming along. I didn't have a clue how well they would do with their little root balls planted two feet deep. They're ready for their siesta. They were out in full, brighrt sun all day. Sun so bright I couldn't even see my phone screen to take a decent picture.
