Datil Pepper growers

I don't see much talk of the Datil peppers and was just curious as to why.  I have some seedlings going now and may want to talk with those who have experience with this pepper.  I started some early this fall hoping for germination and plan is to try to keep them pruned and topped to keep manageable indoors until spring.  They are growing at various sizes.  I'll try to post some pics when I get a chance with a couple of questions.
Thanks all!

Love them.
I've grown them the past 2 years and use them to add a bit of heat to stuff in lieu of habaneros. Better flavor too :)

Glad to hear.  I like the flavor also in lieu of habs.  I may be asking you some "help" questions on growing them.

I tried search but evidently didn't have the luck that most have with the search function.  Thanks for all the links!  Will definitely check them out.
I'm such a Internet Illiterate!

I haven't grown Datils yet, but I'm tempted. They seem like they're another one of those "cult" peppers; a lot of folks do grow them, and some of those folks grow like dozens and dozens of Datil plants each season. They are the official pepper of St Augustine, and a lot of Florida growers are into them.

I guess the only thing keeping me from growing them is I only have so much space and i am already growing peppers that offer similar practical uses. Of course, I guess I could make room by growing only 30 Scotch Bonnet plants and squeeze 3 Datil plants in there...

Maybe someday, I will.... =D

Wow!  30 Scotch Bonnets?  What do you do with them all?  I'll be growing some this coming season also.  MOA's so far.  Are you making a sauce?

Sauce, jelly, powder, smoked pods, eat'm with every meal, give then to friends, barter with local restaurants, feed them to dogs that bark too much, etc. But mostly lots of sauce.

A lot of ppl love the MOAs. I got other favorites. If u have the space, consider growing other strains of yellow SBs. I suggest PDreadie, TFM, and Beth Boyd aka Foodarama...

You like those you are probably a candidate to join the Datil cult. Those pretty little Datil are like bursts of hot hot hot Florida sunshine.
While different, they have a flavor on par with those killer bonnets you named above.

I grew sweet datil the past 2 years. Froze several gallon bags, bottled some, and saved seed from a few generations of my best plants/pods. Now they're on hold while i grow other types.

Great flavor, good heat; I just like crushing them and smelling the inside of the pod. Versatile pepper. Hugely prolific. I grew 3 plants this year and had way too many peppers; gave a bunch away. With space being at a premium, I can do 1 or 2 datils, but I'll always grow it.

You're probably right. It's funny; one of my buddies is vacationing in St Augustine right now, and the rest of us face timed him during our Sunday night bar hop. When I found out which city he was in, I asked him to score me some sauce, and explained to the rest of the posse that Datils are the official chile of the City.

Now, they're all demanding I grow some next year... I always kinda figured they're redundant for a guy who already grows Bonnets and Fataliis....

But I'll likely do it anyway
