No grow log for the 2018 season other than the Pimenta de Neyde x Bonda Ma Jacques
thread dedicated to Trippa's cross. That one is an ongoing community project going into
second year and a test of the F7 generation. I imagine I will mention it once-in-a-while in
this thread, but the details of its progress will be in the dedicated thread.
 
I am deciding on a grow list for the 2019 season after growing only Trippa's cross this
season (2018). I definitely have some old favorites that will comprise the great majority
of the grow. I have limited space, so I'm counting on nature to help me make the final
decision. I'll probably start lots of seeds since I'm gun-shy from the poor germination
rates the past couple of seasons.
 
Here's the pool. Would be nice to be able to grow a bunch of all of them!  I think my
neighbor will shelter the overflow in his yard, but we'll see what to plant and how many
based on what might germinate  :rofl:
 
c. chinese - 10 varieties: 
  • PdN x BMJ, F7, white and violet varieties, Trippa's cross
  • Fatali, F2 of seed from Pepper Joe's
  • 7 Pot Burgundy, brown phenotype, pecan shape from 2017 F2 of the 7PB from Windchicken 
  • Scotch Bonnet, MoA, F2 of seeds from John/Sim, not high production, but some nice pods
  • JA Red Habanero, F5 of seed from Walk Good/Devv
  • Yellow Scorpion, F7 aka Yellow Trinidad Moruga Scorpion and CARDI Scorpion, from Spankycolts plant 2012
  • Bhut Jolokia, Red, F4, from Spankycolts plant 2012
  • Bhut Jolokia, Chocolate, F3 of seed from Georgia Growhead
  • Bhut Jolokia, hybrid, F2 - I believe it is a  (BJred) x (Pdn x BMJ F1 or F2)
  • Yellow 7 Pot, F2 of seed from Trippa 2013
c. annuum - 4 varieties:
  • JA Red Mushroom, F3, brown phenotype, seed from Refining Fire
  • Pimenta de Padron - Spanish seed, fry up while small and green, throw on some salt
  • Pimenta del Piquillo - Spanish seed, sweet, very flavorful, small stuffers
  • Guindilla - Spanish seed, spicy heat, great pickled, long and skinny
c. frutescens - 2 varieties:
  • Nagahari from Tezpur, India, supposedly very, very hot freebie from Pepper Joe's 2017
  • Chili Costa Rica, F2 (2014) from Hippy Seed Company seed, 2012
c. pubescens - 1 variety:
  • Red Rocoto, F3 of Peruvian Market seed, 2016
That about does it. Seeding time will be here before we know it!

Ran out of my FoxFarms mix about 8-10 transplantings ago. Have been using the last of some
BlackGold I had from two seasons ago, but ran out of that, as well. Guess that is a good problem
to have, means lots of plants! I bought 2 cubic feet each of BlackGold and TurfKing all purpose
potting soil and mixed together. I got almost five five-gal. Buckets full of the mix. Enough to last
through Round Two seeding, and any general potting in the garden. Along with my own compost
and soil, should be good for the season.

The last of the Bhut Jolokia hybrids are in 2.6-liter
square pots. The little one on the right is the lone
seedling from the three-inch pod seed. Took a long
time to germinate, then came out wearing the seed
husk. Survived minor surgery to remove the husk,
then lived four weeks in a RockWool cube.

First plants to be go I nto the BG / TK mix.

The Kratky jar BJ hybrid is growing right along.
I will let it go just to see what happens. Already
eyeing larger containers for upgrade,

It is a decent potting soil, as is the Turf King.
The BG is a bit lighter due to more peat content.

These plants will be in it for six weeks or so
until time to plant out.

I have been watering with Cal-Mag and put a little
bone meal in the soil, so I don't think that's a problem.
There is no yellowing at all.

I've read in a few places now that it's a root issue. Don't know if that's true, but it doesn't seem unreasonable.  I found this interesting:

despite it being about a tomato because a few of the leaves are folding in the same odd manner and the comment references him having shown actual leaves to the Columbia Horticulture Department.
 
That he was told "It is usually brought on warm temperatures and too much moisture in the pot" might also be consistent with me experiencing it in my plants furthest from the fan and the better air circulation.

Food for thought, for sure, CD. Tough to pin down,
since all plants receive the same treatment and
environment.

I think it's nitrogen rich, just a little. I wouldn't worry about it. Limiting factor of growth is always the "least" of whatever, so it might be a tad short on one of the micro nutrients. But in this case one of the micros can't quite keep up with the prodigious quantity of N, so you get a lot of extra intra-vein growth that kind of makes leaves curl a bit. (magnesium def does the opposite, not enough growth between veins, so leaves cup up)

That could be, Trent. I fertilize with AK Fish Fert
and More-Bloom alternated with Cal-Mag/Silica Blast.

If I had to wager a guess, on what micro you might be a tad deficient in, it'd probably be sulfur, but that's just a guess. It's not bad enough to even think about addressing, if you get it wrong could do more damage than help.

Right you are, Trent. I am not concerned about
it at all, and won't do anything at this point.
Just sort of an oddity that I'd like pinned down!

4/4 - germinator note. Centers of trays too warm.
Removing domes, and replacing with just a sheet
of plastic wrap to see if that cools it down a few
degrees.
 
Dammit, greenhouse, greenhouse, high tunnel, greenhouse...The wind here keeps me from making a decision on one, but I sorely need something. My latest delusion is to build onto the south side of the house, but that's the FRONT of the house, which means I'm not allowed to go "trailer park" with design and build...

The Harbor Freight 6x8 greenhouse
for $300 is hard to beat.
 
BTW, you could always just add a sun porch
to your house, then it's not 'trailer park'  ;)

I thought aboot chiming in on that but it wasn't my place I figured.....I knew you used a cal mag and pretty sure everyone who chimed in used something similar I believe, so I wwould agree that the issue likely isn't a calcium issue. I dug around for a few days on a couple different search engines and really could not find anything that would convince me what the issue was.
 
Regardless the couple plants that do seem to have the slight downward curl are not hurting much it seems, but I also for the sake of learning, was anxious to pin it down.
 
 
Also - LOVE the selection of sweet peppers Paul...Will have to trade ya for some next season if your down with that

Alsolutely, my friend! You are welcome to whatever I
wind up with. I'm not very optimistic about some of
the older ones, but am holding out for good germination
despite some hiccup in germinating temps

Greenhouse plants seem to be dining at McDonalds.
All getting big and robust. I actually think they like more
of a temperature swing than they get in the garage. In the
mornings, the leaves are all super perky and they look ready
for the day. Just a few random pics...
