PaulG 2019

No grow log for the 2018 season other than the Pimenta de Neyde x Bonda Ma Jacques
thread dedicated to Trippa's cross. That one is an ongoing community project going into
second year and a test of the F7 generation. I imagine I will mention it once-in-a-while in
this thread, but the details of its progress will be in the dedicated thread.

I am deciding on a grow list for the 2019 season after growing only Trippa's cross this
season (2018). I definitely have some old favorites that will comprise the great majority
of the grow. I have limited space, so I'm counting on nature to help me make the final
decision. I'll probably start lots of seeds since I'm gun-shy from the poor germination
rates the past couple of seasons.

Here's the pool. Would be nice to be able to grow a bunch of all of them!  I think my
neighbor will shelter the overflow in his yard, but we'll see what to plant and how many
based on what might germinate

c. chinese - 10 varieties
  • PdN x BMJ, F7, white and violet varieties, Trippa's cross
  • Fatali, F2 of seed from Pepper Joe's
  • 7 Pot Burgundy, brown phenotype, pecan shape from 2017 F2 of the 7PB from Windchicken
  • Scotch Bonnet, MoA, F2 of seeds from John/Sim, not high production, but some nice pods
  • JA Red Habanero, F5 of seed from Walk Good/Devv
  • Yellow Scorpion, F7 aka Yellow Trinidad Moruga Scorpion and CARDI Scorpion, from Spankycolts plant 2012
  • Bhut Jolokia, Red, F4, from Spankycolts plant 2012
  • Bhut Jolokia, Chocolate, F3 of seed from Georgia Growhead
  • Bhut Jolokia, hybrid, F2 - I believe it is a  (BJred) x (Pdn x BMJ F1 or F2)
  • Yellow 7 Pot, F2 of seed from Trippa 2013
c. annuum - 4 varieties:
  • JA Red Mushroom, F3, brown phenotype, seed from Refining Fire
  • Pimenta de Padron - Spanish seed, fry up while small and green, throw on some salt
  • Pimenta del Piquillo - Spanish seed, sweet, very flavorful, small stuffers
  • Guindilla - Spanish seed, spicy heat, great pickled, long and skinny
c. frutescens - 2 varieties:
  • Nagahari from Tezpur, India, supposedly very, very hot freebie from Pepper Joe's 2017
  • Chili Costa Rica, F2 (2014) from Hippy Seed Company seed, 2012
c. pubescens - 1 variety:
  • Red Rocoto, F3 of Peruvian Market seed, 2016
That about does it. Seeding time will be here before we know it!

Pretty much exactly the situation here in Helsinki as well. I don't have a greenhouse so I don't usually leave most of my peppers outside until after the first week of June when nighttime temps are on the average 10c (50f).

Do you leave them outside when nighttime temps are still in the 30-40f's or only in the greenhouse?

I don't leave them outside until the temps at
night are in the mid-40s, except Rocotos and
Aji Amarillos. They can take a bit cooler temps,
but I still don't like to leave them out below 42-45˚F.

My problem at this time of year is that on a sunny
day, the temps in the greenhouse can hit 80-85˚ even
on a 65-70˚ degree day. If the temp is above 75, it can
get pretty hot, even with doors and windows open. So,
I wind up moving plants around a lot in the weeks before
plant-out. From sun to shade to partial shade and back to
the greenhouse in the evening. Same for some plants in the
garage at night that don't fit in the greenhouse anymore.

Good luck getting into your summer season, Mika!

Wow, I can't keep up anymore! I have 2 AA's going this year. I love the pods and they do OK here. I'll take what I can get

Always great stuff here Paul ;) Your grow is an inspiration
You are too kind, as usual, Scott. I seem to muddle
through the season retrofitting and revising to
correct mistakes and oversights   Good thing
chilis can grow without any real assistance from us
humans.

I hope those Aji Amarillo are productive for you, brother.

You know your well ahead of the game when you live in Oregon and have plants throwing out yellow brain strain pods in May. Nice work Paul I'm green with Envy. I'm gonna be planting seeds around thanksgiving just to see if I can keep up with you next season   whats your weather looking like these days? We have some 80-85s showing up this coming week, I feel like your a little warmer then we are as a rule of thumb? I'm considering planting out a few of my large gallons on thursday-friday. Hows things looking on your end?

Blazers Win!! Blazer Win!!

Man what a series, was much better then the Raptors/Sixers, excluding the final shot by Kawhi last night.

Have just heeled in my plants to get them accustomed
to their locations before actually planting. After the last
few hot days, the next few cooler sunny/cloudy dates
should be good for final hardening off.

Will have some pix up tomorrow.

I had to look up Spanish Guindilla; that's a new one to me. Do you have any specific use for it in mind?

I mostly had them pickled in Spain. And green.

Not quite sure what do do with them, yet. They
can have a little kick.

Looking good as usual. I've been out of the game for a few months but I've been popping in to check on things, keep it up.

Thanks for the kind words, friend! I am glad
you are back in in the saddle again!

Crazy! Well developed pods to new seedlings! You definitely have the "itus" my friend! Catching up from a computer catastrophe...hope to stay up and running...and running is what i'll need to do to keep up with the likes of you!

Been a crazy season so far, Shane. Lots of fits
and starts, but plants are looking good outside.

Will try to get some pix up tomorrow. Im the one
trying to keep up here, Mr. Pepper Head!

Yeah, that was a cliff-hanger!
The Blazers have reached deep to get to this point.
The road through the Western Conference is just
brutal. They have put together some great wins this
post-season.

Plants have been heeled in to pass the remaining days
until plant-out in the locations I have planned for them.
Doing that so I can see how they do in those spaces,
and so I do not have to move them around any more!

We are into a little cool, cloudy spell with a little rain and
sun breaks for the next week or so. Good hardening off
weather. It is a welcome break following the past week
of abnormally high temperatures.

Here are the plants in the big containers... a bit hard to
see some due to background foliage

Bhut Jolokia plants. Red between two Chocolates.

Help! These beautiful Bhut Jolokia hybrids are still under
lights in the garage. Tried to harden them a little, but they
did not like it one bit during the hot weather!

The two big ones are twins from the
2-1/2 inch 2017 pod, and the smaller, just beginning to fork,
from the 3 inch pod - the only one to germinate and very late.
It will go into a 3-gallon pot when time comes for planting.

I am hoping to get them all started on some outside exposure/
greenhouse during this cooler weather phase:

That is all the updates for now. Hope everyone is enjoying
some good growing weather, or at least the prospect of some!
Will try to visit a few more grow logs during the cool rainy day
today, although the sky is lightening considerably at the moment!

Looking good Paul! It's going to be a good year ;)
I hope so, my friend. I hope the weather
is being decent for you, as well.
Do you really use all those peppers? Cuz you're gonna be loooaaaddded!
I give a lot away, and powder a lot.
I still have powder from 2012

If there was a market for it, I could sell a
bunch of it, and still have enough for me to use!

I might try some fermenting this Fall with some of
my favorites. Then what? I don't know.

Maybe I'll set up a 'Fresh Red Hots' stand in my
front yard this summer!
