stc's comeback down south grow...

Hey THP...been a while and much has changed for me and my family. We accepted orders to Charleston, SC and now reside in a small town just north of there called Moncks Corner. I haven't really had a grow in three years, so it is going to be nice getting back out in the dirt. My modest list thus far:

Red Brain Strain 7 pot:   coheed
Orange Brain Strain 7 pot: gnslngr
7 pot Monster Infinity: gnslngr
Trinidad Scorpion Chocolate: gnslngr
Reaper
Charrapita Yellow
Primo X (my cross)
Jay's Peach Ghost Scorpion
Jay's Red Ghost Scorpion
Bhut Orange Copenhagen
SB7J: Romy 6???
Naga Reaper
Fatalii
7 Pot Primo
7 Pot Barrackpore
Large Yellow Brain Strain
Yellow Bhut: Spicegeist
Yellow 7 Pot Primo: Romy 6
UBSC
7 Pot Rennie
Brown Moruga
Butch T
Douglah x Butch T: gnslngr
Yellow Cardi Scorpion: Romy6

I sowed 3 seeds each for these varieties, but expect some no shows. Many of these seeds are almost 10 years old. My grow setup will be two grow tents with 300w Mars Hydro LED lights on the seedlings and as they get bigger they will graduate to 600w Mars Hydros. My main garden this year will be in straw bales, but I may keep a few indoors under lights all season.

The Baccatum and Annuum lists to follow...

I've missed growing and the THP community.

Oh, yeah, sure.  Modest list  ;) and you don't
even have the baccatums or annuums yet!

Good luck with those older seeds, buddy.
I guess when you plant those babies, you
have to take what you get!

Welcome back to the glogosphere, Shane!
Great to see you back on board, chief!

Looking forward to your mad skills exhibition

Germination station up and running...Lights only on for the photo, once (if) I get some seeds to pop they will come back on. Tried and true 72 cell peat pellets under the nautical towel along with a heat mat on a thermostat which is cooking at a temperature of 82 fun filled degrees. This 2x4 tent will house the little guys from germination through the first few weeks before they move on to a 4x4 tent once they're a little bigger. After all the seedlings are up and running both tents will be used to grow them until time for plant out. Last frost here is only one week later than it was for me out in California...March 26 is the date, but I will probably wait a little longer if I can get away with it. The lights are two Mars Hydro 300s in this tent and the larger tent will have two 300s and two 600s. If I really start to run short of space I can use this entire room and I have several hundred CFL's and a couple more UFO leds to make that happen...hope it doesn't come to that, but I know how I get once I start planting seeds...  :shh:

I also mentioned I was going with straw bales for my garden...here is an article on it.

Hope everyone is doing well.

Alright, Shane, up and running.

I saw a grow tent similar to that one at the local
growers' supply when I was buying some
FF soil this week. I'd say the footprint was
about 4x8 with two big doors, so it was nice
and big.

Price quoted was about $300 which I didn't
think was that horrible for what it was.

Good luck with the straw bale garden.  The few
of those I've seen on the forum are intriguing.
Also very interesting are the grow blocks that
Juanitos uses.

They sell these tents in a variety of sizes. If you shop online you should be able to find them for less than half that price. I just looked and on Amazon there are several options below $150 for 4x8 size. Most of them have a waterproof liner for the bottom of the tent that rides up the sides 4 or 5 inches so that there are no spills. The Mars lights are a bargain as well. I get them from ebay and they're also very reasonable. The bale garden is mainly because I want to get the garden up a little...when it rains it pours here and even though I am at a decent elevation the ground can stay pretty saturated for a while. I may try to build some raised beds next year if these don't do well for me. As always at least half my plants will be in containers and for those I will be using grow bags of the 5, 7, and 10# varieties...but I do also have 2 or 3 25# bags out there to use as well. Maybe a Manzano or Rocoto in one of those...

Good to be on here again...hope I stick with it.

DWB is doing a hay bale grow, I think his will do really well

That is interesting. They focus on providing sugar in a simple form (dextrose/glucose?) along with increased available O2 (time release vs saturation based on the presence of bubbles forming during the process and need to sell it as a kit?).  They don't address increasing the likelihood the seed coat is shed properly, but perhaps the increased vigor of the seeds from additional simple sugar and O2 sources helps?  I wonder how necessary the 3rd step is after providing the sugar and O2 during initial imbibation.

Darn it Paul, this was supposed to be a quick THP check-in and now I'm going to be thinking about this for a while.

Merry Christmas!

Sounds like some good material for an experiment or two!

Merry Christmas! Hope you are enjoying the holiday season, 'Dog.
I think just following his regime with DIY ingredients
would be pretty simple.  I am going to use a peroxide
soak this season. Never done that before. I need to
look up ways to oxygenate water for the second step.
I would think any sugar would work, maybe the simpler
the better.  I wonder about fructose...

Sorry for the tangent in your glog stc - hope you're having a great Christmas!

I have all the gear I'd need from homebrewing, including dextrose and an oxygen tank and SS diffuser wand from running high OG and lager fermentations, so I  think I'll give this a go.  I had a lot of old seed I'm trying to recover in my current grow and I see you and stc with cool and older varieties, so being able to improve the odds against extinction would be a good thing.  Feel free to post in my glog more about this including thoughts on sugar (5%?) and O2 concentrations (12ppm?).
