Mattys first ever Glog "Into the fire" 2019 season

Hello everyone and thanks for looking at my "Into the Fire" Glog!!

So I started my gardening hobby in my early 20's about 16 years ago now, and though I have played around with many types of flowers/vegis  tomato's is what most of my energy was put into. I loved alll the different colors and types that could be grown which really reminds me of all the exciting Chilli variety's that exist today. A couple seasons ago while looking for some info on a particular type of sweet pepper I stumbled onto a few videos of some people eating super hots (Ghost,Reapers ect..).  After looking into it a little more I figured this would be a very interesting thing to grow even just as a novelty since really no one in my area grows much if anything at all.

Last Winter I went and bought some seeds from Ebay..one was a mixed bag Ghost/Reaper/Scorpion...another was the Peter Pepper and the third was some type of Thai i believe. Only the Thai ended up growing true to type and the other 2 was a Cayenne and Ornamental. I was pretty disappointed when they did finally start putting out pods. It was around that time I started looking for a group or forum dedicated to Chillis, and luck would have it I found THP and all of you fantastic peoples.

Anyways with the boring back story outta the way I really planned ahead for this years grow....I built a 6'Hx6'Lx2'D grow box (not exact mesurments) which has 3 shelves and the middle one able to come out if I wnated to grow larger plants from the bottom tier. I went overkill on seed types making 3 decent size buys, 2 of which were 30+ from Garth at TexasHotPeppers and a smaller one from a fella in Arz.

I do not plan to grow all of these as my wife would kill me, but 20 or so might not be so bad.

So would like to see some favorites and suggestions from the fine people here at THP so I can kinda get it down to a much much smaller grow list. Will also get some pics up shortly here of my grow box which still has one more shelf I need to wire up just waiting on a few more strip lights to arrive in the mail, but will still give an idea of what it will all look like when its done.

In final: This is a new hobby for me within the hobby I already enjoy...I am going to try some new things (new for me) and even the much earlier starts then normal will be interesting to see how it all comes out at the end.  I look forward to the input from the community and keeping this glog updated as much as I can.

Here is too success in 2019!!

CHEERS!

Matty

I like to go with more N when they're young and not into flowering. Then I go with a more balanced product. So I start with the Alaska fish stank ferts at 1/2 strength, adding it to my bottom watering routine.

I found an old post Made by Terry (Tc1010 I believe) tried it and have been very pleased with the results:

22.5 potting  gallons       5
5 compost    gallons       1.1
12.5 tomato tone  cups   2.7
5 cups bone meal           1.1
3/4 cup kelp meal           .16
2.5 gallons perlite           .5

The numbers on the right are a smaller batch breakdown. Way  easier to mix. ;) When the plants leave the 3.5" pots into #1's that's the mix I use.

I'm sure you can do the math with the nutes you have on hand...one way or another ;)

Great information thanks Scotty!!

So last night I put MORE seeds into soak..though I wanted to do a germ test on some tomater seeds after trying a couple new gel removal from the seed coats and ended up adding a few ornamental types, as well some poblanos.

This morning I got one tray into some dirt then grabbed my second tray off the very top shelf of the grow box...on my way to the kitchen my foot got caught in the blankets we use to cover our couch (keep dog hair and children disasters off of them), I fell pretty hard and at first I tried to keep a hold onto the tray to save the seeds...I then realized I was gonna hit even harder if I held on and basically tossed the tray....seeds went EVERYWHERE....I am still finding them in weird places this evening.

I am going to have to do a re-soak tonight of a few types I badly wanted for this year...and maybe it was a sign since my second package from Garth arrived today safe and sound and was a few from my list I wanted to add.

So I had to bite the bullet and just did a small set up on the top shelf so I did not have to light it all up for all the extras I have for now.

Coming along pretty decent...I think they are going abit slower then normal as the humidity is very very low which is not something that is easy to fix, mostly because of the type of lights and where I have my grow box.

I agree, the light shapes and designs are trippy. Well done you funky Canadian chicken

LOL thanks fellas...I think??

Was a tad worried the top would not be bright enough and could only fit so many strips up there, so the back was the only place left obviously to add some extra lighting via the strips. I wanna try and find some clip on pendants for the other side as well, it should get better in the next year once I slowly add a bigger size smd chip or strips that have more leds on them.

I had intended on making my own blurple strips but quickly realized (after I bought them of course) they were not gonna put out enough light for the size I initially bought. Around the same time I had bought the blurple bulbs and 2 of those panel lights so figured I should at least use them if I already had them.

Welp...this morning I put the seeds lost in yesterdays tray flipping catastrophe back into soak..and since my final seed order came (Thanks Garth!!) I added the last few types I will try and grow this year....

The Phurple Bhut- Inspired by Bobos bhut fest he has going on.
The White wasp
Pink Tiger
And finally the Snow White

All 3   4* look awesome and I really like different colors in the garden so pretty much anything other then the normal reds really appeal to me.

Dude! Your grow shelf is lit up like a casino!

You okay after your tumble, buddy? Really sorry
to hear about your mishap. I thought I was the
only one who did stuff like that. But, good on ya
for getting some more seeds going right away

Your other seedlings and starts are looking awesome.
All very healthy and all eager-looking!  Evidently, they
like the casino atmosphere

You know Paul, the day I tripped I did not feel to bad really...Like I hurt now and then anyways but that goes back to my Hockey and Baseball days... But the day after I was pretty stiff and that lasted for a few days, which mostly was my left shoulder and right knee both of which are in pretty bad shape as it is. At the very least it would of made for some great hidden cam footage...seeds to the ceiling then my 5 minute rant afterwards....

I was getting ready to do an update post last night then fell asleep in my computer chair for at least an hour while waiting for the pics to upload. I woke up too "Hey pepper nerd...go to bed" from my wife at 2am.

SOOOOO...I saw this coming last week " A victim of your own success" - as Paul mildly put it. I was left with little choice and lit up the top shelf over the weekend, its hard to tell from the pics but it is certainly much brighter then the middle. I tossed in some more blocks to raise the plants closer to the lights similar to the middle, though they are closer as its a few inches shorter.

Is still a small batch germing on the single heat mat and have a couple trays with odds and ends waiting to see if anything else pops....I am going to have some hard decisions to make in the coming weeks,  may need to try and find some homes or sell some excess plants if I can.....Would hate to have to just kill the poor buggers after even just the time already put into them.

Good looking plants.
They seem to like the 70's Disco atmosphere.

Its kind of funny cause in the pics everyone can see the different colors Warm White,Cool White,Red and Blue, but in the room its just a white color emitted from the shelfand cannot tell or see the others. The middle shelf is abit more blueish light since it has more cool lights 6500ks up top. Some of the strips are also Blurple grow strips mixed in as well.

But ty Karoo /cheeers
