Mattys first ever Glog "Into the fire" 2019 season

Hello everyone and thanks for looking at my "Into the Fire" Glog!!
 
So I started my gardening hobby in my early 20's about 16 years ago now, and though I have played around with many types of flowers/vegis  tomato's is what most of my energy was put into. I loved alll the different colors and types that could be grown which really reminds me of all the exciting Chilli variety's that exist today. A couple seasons ago while looking for some info on a particular type of sweet pepper I stumbled onto a few videos of some people eating super hots (Ghost,Reapers ect..).  After looking into it a little more I figured this would be a very interesting thing to grow even just as a novelty since really no one in my area grows much if anything at all.
 
Last Winter I went and bought some seeds from Ebay..one was a mixed bag Ghost/Reaper/Scorpion...another was the Peter Pepper and the third was some type of Thai i believe. Only the Thai ended up growing true to type and the other 2 was a Cayenne and Ornamental. I was pretty disappointed when they did finally start putting out pods. It was around that time I started looking for a group or forum dedicated to Chillis, and luck would have it I found THP and all of you fantastic peoples.
 
Anyways with the boring back story outta the way I really planned ahead for this years grow....I built a 6'Hx6'Lx2'D grow box (not exact mesurments) which has 3 shelves and the middle one able to come out if I wnated to grow larger plants from the bottom tier. I went overkill on seed types making 3 decent size buys, 2 of which were 30+ from Garth at TexasHotPeppers and a smaller one from a fella in Arz.
 
I do not plan to grow all of these as my wife would kill me, but 20 or so might not be so bad.

Will also get some pics up shortly here of my grow box which still has one more shelf I need to wire up just waiting on a few more strip lights to arrive in the mail, but will still give an idea of what it will all look like when its done.
 
In final: This is a new hobby for me within the hobby I already enjoy...I am going to try some new things (new for me) and even the much earlier starts then normal will be interesting to see how it all comes out at the end.  I look forward to the input from the community and keeping this glog updated as much as I can.

Moose and Bears? That's tear up and go home type critters!
 
Here we have Deer, Turkey, Javelina, Coyote, Mountain Lion, and of course the good Ole Skunks, along with the Coons and Porcupines. The dogs always seem to find a Skunk that has wandered inside the fence somehow :rolleyes:

Hey Matty, have you fished the Chapleau area , eh. I went on a walleye fly-in fishing trip there about 20 some years ago. Also I did a fly-in fishing trip out of Mount Lake area for Pike. Seen my first ever in the wild cow and calf moose on that trip. Both places were beautiful [emoji106].

So speaking of skunks...Last fall begin the onslaught from the neighbours dogs getting into the trash, since it was so wet it was nearly impossible to burn the trash especially stuff like soiled diapers which need a very very hot fire to do so. Anyways with trash getting ripped up attracted unwanted attention from the critters like skunks and so on.....Mean while this Farrel cat who is just as bad as the dogs sometimes lives under the house for a few days at a time then wanders for a few ect...
 
Anyways this damn cat must of got into a fight with the skunk which sprayed under the house in the middle of the night, it was so bad we woke up around 2-3am and our eyes were on fire and it almost tasted like I had eating a white onion or something...It took at least a month to finally get rid of the smell...on top of that we had to wash our clothes to wear for the next day then keep them in bags which were inside of plastic bins so no one dragged the smell off to work/town with them. All the food in the house had to be tossed and we must have spent a good $500-600 on skunk out and different sprays to combat it.
 
I am still actually worried he went and dug a hole under the house to sleep for the winter so been keeping an eye out, I did try and trap him but he was too big for the trap I had. I have a very old .22 laying around but couldn't get close enough to him or a good enough shot without chancing at hitting the house. I have shot a few skunks over the years with my bow but I sold my gear about 2 years ago since I don't hunt anymore, wish I still had it last fall though.
 
 
I would love to see a Mountain Lion in the wild though, depending on the circumstance of course. Had to look up what A Javelina was actually I never heard a Peccary called that before. My dad used to raise Razerbacks for a couple years but they were master escape artist and would run out on the highway. This Kinda reminds me of another story...lol
 
 
My dad who had a hobby farm and raised all sorts of things..dozens of specialty birds (pheasants,quail, wild turkeys, Ginnie hens ect...) He also bought a couple Emu one winter....I was up here for a few months as the schools had gone on strike and took a part time job with my brother at a local tree nursery, Anyways one day coming home from work we were aboot 2-3 mins from home and was a huge convoy of cars and trucks lined up on the highway moving along at a crawl, the radio was on and inbetween songs the DJ mentioned there was a problem on Highway #17 from an animal which is normal here with the moose and deer causing collisions..Then he mentioned a caller had said there was on "Ostrich" running down the middle of the highway, at which point my brother and I both gave the 'Oh shit' look at each other. I got onto the shoulder of the road and ripped up the road to see one of the birds running straight down the middle of the highway with a transport right behind it....Managed to get ahead of the truck and got beside the Emu and angled it off so it ran off into a ditch with a steep incline...Snow was so damn deep it had trouble running and fell, At this point we were on foot and tackled it, dunno if any of you have seen the feet on an emu/ostrich before...they have massive claws essentially that are like razors, needless to say we had to take one for the team. Anyways by this point one of the neighbors was driving by and jumped out to help, we had to hold it down for aboot 10 mins while he ran back to grab a few ropes to tie it up. Took 4 people to carry this bloody thing up the hill through the deep ass snow and toss it into the back of the truck, bugger had run about 4-5km from home by that point. Within a month though one of them had died un-expectantly so in the early summer my dad just cooked him up at some gathering he had, no more Emus after that.

No sir I have not fished in the Chapleau area to be honest. In fact, I have only passed through it once and that was because the highway around Lake Superior had been shut down due to a very bad accident, so we had to back track abit then take that desolate highway up to Timmins.
 
Chapleau is pretty similar to where I live, but also a very unique location as its only a couple hours from a couple larger towns, but off any of the major highways its essentially in the middle of nowhere. Most of the area around it is Native American Reservations and the rest is a massive nature reserve, where pretty much everything is protected I believe other then fishing.
 
I actually used to work in a fly-in off and on for 4-5 years inbetween my Baseball and Hockey seasons as my dad managed one for a good 9-10 years on Seseganaga Lake Ont, the flight service flew from Savant Lake. Worked as a dock hand and did alot of guiding, was decent money for a teenager at the time, even more so since you had no where to spend it being stuck there with no way out other then to fly and drive 4 hours to buy anything.

Had a guy killed by his Cassowary a few days ago down in.. Florida, I think.  Big birds are no joke.  Modern dinosaurs.

Only a couple I would even call relevant and worth being told, prolly a bunch of others that are more 'Ya had to be there' type storys, the swan and emu events are still fun to laugh aboot though.
 
 
Those Cassowary's don't have the title of worlds dangerous bird for nothing, they are extremely ornery but I also think they are very pretty compared to most Ostrich type species, kinda remind me of a giant Peacock, all be it one that could slash you wide open if provoked.
 
I have some skunk and emu stories for you Matty.
 
Many moons ago we came home late, late after hosting my parents 50th anniversary celebration. (They have #66 this year). I smelled it as soon as I pulled in the garage. Didn't even have to open the car door. After a few choice expletives we walked in the house and yup, there it is. The house reeked and the dogs reeked. I saw the blood trail running from the doggie door in the laundry room and through the kitchen. I followed it down the hall and into one of the back bedrooms and there was the blood puddle. A lot of blood. We never did find the skunk body. The way that night went it was probably eaten by a huge rattlesnake right after the dogs dumped it in the yard. Or maybe it survived long enough to leave the area but it sure lost a lot of blood. None of the dogs were injured. Long story short, my wife slept in the car and I washed the entire house that night with Nature's Miracle enzymatic cleaner. That afternoon we had my parents come out for a test since my mother can smell a fart from 20 miles away. The skunk smell was undetectable in the house although she could smell it very strongly out in the yard.
 
Now back to the mid-90 for an emu story. I had a young male emu with a crook in his neck. I also had a chiropractor friend who came out for a visit and saw my birds. He noticed Crook and said "We can fix that".  Okay, I got behind the bird and hugged him tight. Doc did the "adjustment" and the bird went wild. He wanted Doc's ass bad so I couldn't let go and get away. My wife was screaming at him to GTF outta the stall so I could get loose and escape. Long story short, the bird completely shredded my Levi's into ribbons but didn't cut me. Only a few scratches. Doc got away clean and Crook's neck was fixed and my wife was pissed. Bigtime.
 
Okay, one more emu story. Not long after Crook got fixed, two females had a bad breeding season fight and Bridette Birdot got her neck slashed pretty dang bad. A deep and nasty cut about 6" long. Not into the windpipe and not much blood but it needed fixed. Of course, this disaster (like most disasters) happened when the vets are closed so I had to sew it up. Long story short, she wouldn't hold still so we walked together around and around in the stall while I put some stitches in her. My wife watched from outside the stall and offered up a running commentary about my mental stability.
 
Hey Unc_E, I think emu are dinos. Seems like I remember something about the species being 6 million years old.

The Mountain Lions scare me the worst. I was deer hunting in a wooden blind 8' up and one screamed behind me, pretty close. The hair stood up on my neck and I got one of those holy crap chills at the same time. Then there was the bear in Virginia while hiking in the mountains. Heard the roar, about face, and outa here!
 
 
Glad I didn't buy into the Emu craze here in the early 90's after reading these stories ;)
 
Skunk story: We just bought this place, and this is 30 years ago. The first week we were here I saw two skunks under the Mercury Vapor light the electric co provides us. Oh, I don't want them around with the young kiddos and all, they carry rabies. It was late March and still cool out. The windows on the South and East were open (get where I'm going with this?). I sneak out the front door with my 12 guage, boom! 1 skunk down, the other hauling some bird shot. I come in the house all proud, until I stepped into our bedroom. Wife's got the sheet pulled over her head "we can't sleep in here tonight" We didn't.
 
#2 About 5 years ago we had a dog named Otis, he killed 8 skunks and got sprayed 9 times in less than 18 months. He didn't care except when we wouldn't let him come inside. I think he put a serious dent in the population as none in the yard since..
 
Take four crushed extra strength aspirin, cut the top off a raw egg, but the aspirin powder in the egg, and put out for the skunks.  Won't harm a dog, if it gets it, but it supposedly will kill a skunk.  Thins their blood too much.  I didn't check to see if this is just an old wives tell or not.  So, YMMV.

Weather has been pretty crappy last 3-4 days...Monday it snowed all day but melted yesterday thankfully, never the less I had the heater running non stop since the weekend in the greenhouse. And other then a bunch of heavy logs I have to pin the frame down, really isn't much else I can do right now as the frost is still only a couple inches below ground level, even the raised beds are harder then a donkey on viagra.
 
Nothing but rain in the forecast for the next few days, which may actually help thaw that stuff out abit faster then the sun at this point if the highs are only hitting 10C or so.

I have some 5630 rigids and they are much much brighter then then standard flexi strips I have been using this year. Think I can do at least 2 of the 3 shelves with that lot I linked up top, maybe even all 3, or at least use some of my regular strips to compensate if I have to.
 
Would likely still mix in abit of colors aye Bryan, though prolyl won't need as many of them with how bright those rigid strips can be.

My wife was not impressed when I sent her a few links the other day while implying that she was going to be busy at some point whipping up some grow bags. Is a pile of stuff you can find , but trying to go more with the bags that look decent and made to last longer then 1 season essentially. Was people who were using a glue gun,staples and even a vacuum sealer, and though they all made a bag that would do the job, they also looked like garbage, my wife is a pretty good seamstress so i should get some pretty decent stuff made up, when I can convince her to sit down and make some that is.
