Mattys first ever Glog "Into the fire" 2019 season

Hello everyone and thanks for looking at my "Into the Fire" Glog!!

So I started my gardening hobby in my early 20's about 16 years ago now, and though I have played around with many types of flowers/vegis  tomato's is what most of my energy was put into. I loved alll the different colors and types that could be grown which really reminds me of all the exciting Chilli variety's that exist today. A couple seasons ago while looking for some info on a particular type of sweet pepper I stumbled onto a few videos of some people eating super hots (Ghost,Reapers ect..).  After looking into it a little more I figured this would be a very interesting thing to grow even just as a novelty since really no one in my area grows much if anything at all.

Last Winter I went and bought some seeds from Ebay..one was a mixed bag Ghost/Reaper/Scorpion...another was the Peter Pepper and the third was some type of Thai i believe. Only the Thai ended up growing true to type and the other 2 was a Cayenne and Ornamental. I was pretty disappointed when they did finally start putting out pods. It was around that time I started looking for a group or forum dedicated to Chillis, and luck would have it I found THP and all of you fantastic peoples.

Anyways with the boring back story outta the way I really planned ahead for this years grow....I built a 6'Hx6'Lx2'D grow box (not exact mesurments) which has 3 shelves and the middle one able to come out if I wnated to grow larger plants from the bottom tier. I went overkill on seed types making 3 decent size buys, 2 of which were 30+ from Garth at TexasHotPeppers and a smaller one from a fella in Arz.

I do not plan to grow all of these as my wife would kill me, but 20 or so might not be so bad.

Will also get some pics up shortly here of my grow box which still has one more shelf I need to wire up just waiting on a few more strip lights to arrive in the mail, but will still give an idea of what it will all look like when its done.

In final: This is a new hobby for me within the hobby I already enjoy...I am going to try some new things (new for me) and even the much earlier starts then normal will be interesting to see how it all comes out at the end.  I look forward to the input from the community and keeping this glog updated as much as I can.

Here is too success in 2019!!

Been abit slow on my replys the past few days folks, been dealing with a leaky roof and its pretty bad. Pulled out some cabinets and shelves that had mold behind them along the baseboards. At first thought maybe it was the plants but found several water trails from the windows and a couple other spots, and the roof is in terrible shape so its coming down between the walls and out the bottom. I HATE mold with a passion and wondering if perhaps it has been a reason why I have been getting sick so much this past year, my son as well , since we found a really bad spot in his room.

Mold SUXs! KILL IT, kill it good Matty.

On a brighter note, your plants continue to look awesome!

Its been one of those weeks man, though I got a ton of stuff done outside since we finally have spring temps. Its still getting too low at nights for plant out, only the past few days where it has stayed above freezing and is a ton of frost in the ground because of it.

That damn roof is making my hair turn grey with how bad it got in less then 2 years, it should of been done way before we ever bought this property.

So got a few of the garden beds ready and did some work on the one still usable flower bed, which was in major disarray but in better shape now at least. I need to get that back piece tilled but is still too much frost only a few inches below ground level its not in the cards just yet. Its going to be late plant out this year and officially this is the longest/worst winter of my life if you count the miserable fall and spring we  had as well.

"Liking" that for the garden beds ready.

It's been a slow spring here, too. Normally our highs here this time of year are in the mid to upper 70s and lows in 50s. The high yesterday was 59°F and the low tomorrow morning is predicted to be 43°F. That might seem like a heatwave to you up North there, but together with all the cold rain we've had, it's still not good for plants.

I think I saw where Devv commented on unseasonably cool temperatures, too. Though for him it's more of a positive than a negative.

Yeah I am going to have to do the roof here as well. The shingles did not hold up at all so you are not alone Matt.

Well I am sort of hardening off the plants. Lots of in and out. I want the nights to warm up so I can just leave the plants out and vent when needed. All 62 of the little buggers plus 2 cherry tomatoes. And then I had to go out and buy the simpler stuff like Padron's, Bonnets, and Paper Lanturn Habs. I think there is something wrong with me! lol

Spring has been slow this year. I must pot up this week or things will get ugly. Once I do they are permanently out in the wild so to speak and ain't returning to the house.

Matty, I think the weather is crazy everywhere anymore. I hope you get to plant your beauties soon. We got another 2.4" of rain this morning. In one stinkin' hour. My plants are growing too fast. They need plant viagra so they can grow some wood. I found several 2+ ft. branches broken off from main stems due to their own weight plus the rain.

Just crazy weather this spring John. I believe it was Thursday, a high of 67°. Normally we're in the low to mid 90's this time of the year. I'll take it, my chinense are setting pods for once!

Sorry aboot the roof Matty. Been there done that. I had to replace 14 16' pieces of my metal roof last spring. Went heavy with the "tar in a tube" stuff while repairing. Just wait until you try to do that stuff in your late 50's...LOL I have seemed to stiffen up a bit in the wrong places...<-- nobody touch that hear?

Feel like I have not been giving this enough attention lately, and apologies for not replying to anyone the past week as I always try and give something back to those who take the time to leave comments in here.Have been spending a ton of time outside and even got a sunburn yesterday on my arms and face/neck.The redneck tan has made an appearance before we have leaves on the trees.

So a few kinda update pics on the post down below (so sit tight if you read this before they are up) but nothing super exciting since plant out has not started yet. I may bite the bullet this weekend, possibly Sunday if the night time forecast holds true.....I have some serious beef with Mother Nature as of late, not cool bro, not cool......

Couple quick shots of the greenhouse packed in......I have been leaving the heat off lately to get them used to the cooler nights and they seem to be doing ok, and I may start putting some into pots today/tomorrow if time allows for it.

Getting ready to do some more peat moss up, so spent a few hours collecting Spagnum and digging out rotton spungy stumps for fill, I am not picky though and will toss in pretty much any thing organic in the mix......

I chop it all up with the 'Peat Maker 1000' or my dad used to call it 'The Peace Maker' and would put strips of tape on it for each snake he ran over. I basically only use that mower to do this kind of stuff and have 2 other mowers that are self propelled, though they have bigger engines I would rather not put them through the stress.

Will do a quick tour around the yard showing the garden beds again, most are ready to rock excluding the back piece that needs tilling then a crap load of work to have it usable of course.

The flower bed from hell....I hate using stones unless they are all flat or I can cut them to fit right, is too much soil that can leak between then fills up with grass and weeds. Whomever first built this had gravel on the bottom of the bed which compacted the soil so bad it was literally like trying to grow in concrete. I dug it all up and made the bed smaller, then added a 5 minute rock wall job so I didn't have to move more stones 75+ yards......

My little guy on the  left is another reason the stones will be a pain in the arse, and will be tossed across the yard at times.....

Continued in next post.....

Next is that gawd awful rotting garden bed and though she may be ugly she does put out, have been amending this damn thing since we moved in and is prolly the only bed I could get away with not feeding if I had too.

Was only going to use this for greens or whatever but decided to dig down about 10inches and widen the holes, after I hilled them up about a foot of soil which will settle down abit at which time I will add some more. Anyways I will take the chance again with some maters or peppers again this year since they should have enough room for the roots.

Back piece that needs to be tilled which I pray will be this weekend if a friend of mine can either lend me his tiller or find the time to bring the family over and we will make a day of it. You can see the outline better of what needs to be done with the grass coming up and getting green.....

QwWAamb.jpg

And the beds I quickly made last year......All of this stuff I will just use for a couple years until I can build nice raised beds that serve the purpose but also look nice.

Can see my 'Compost Bin' in this pic, the neighbors dogs still try and dig under the bloody thing. Its so full from the winters food being frozen for so long the bricks on top are not just to keep the critters out, but just hold down the lid from the food exploding inside.

And the update everyone has been waiting for...."Fanzilla the 2nd" For kicks I bought some fans that had LEDs since people give me the gears aboot my disco tech lighting set up. They are not as flashy as I had hoped but still are fun, is another 7-8 fans I am still waiting on before I start figureing out how I wanna put it all together.

Plants are looking great, hopefully the weather will straighten up for you, eh.
Looks like you have been a busy man lately, eh.
The new fan collection will go good with your disco lights [emoji16]. I love the disco lights by the way, and the way your early season plants looked, they loved the lights also [emoji106].
