So apparently you can get a super-minimal hydroponic setup... from the convenience store.

I knew my office manager had some kind of widget she was using to grow basil in a plastic bottle, but I didn't really think too much about it until I saw she'd picked up strawberries in the same style... so, having the product name, I looked it up. This picture came from Instagram; it's better than the one I took, so here you go. These are sold at 7/11 in Japan.

It's a freaking hydro-widget. I love it!

Her basil sits in a window of our office on the 8th floor; it gets a whole lot of light and does very well. We use it on pizza. So I'm thinking of picking one or two of these up (around $5, or $2.50 if I can find them on sale), tossing the seeds, and using them for peppers with a mild nutrient mix.
 
Do you by chance have a source for this in the US? Can't find anything on a quick google search.
 
Interesting...Ed if you do find something or anyone for that matter drop us a link..would be cool to have a small pre made set up like that.

Thanks for jumping in with this! That site even sells habanero kits, so it's not as though this is an unprecedented idea. Although everything they sell appears to be out of stock...
 
Looks like I no longer need a second grow tent. Now I can just line the office windows with a couple dozen big PET bottles growing exotic peppers my Japanese coworkers have never seen. :D
 
Looks like it is basically Kratky hydroponics in a bottle. You can also do that with just a net cup and a bottle, or using whatever container you like really. And probably for a cheaper price than using the pink widget. Here is a picture of a pepper plant from 2017 that I had growing in a 16 oz Solo cup with Masterblend nutes:

Nice, thanks for the reference. Yeah, the novelty of it is part of the appeal; plus then I can just set it next to the office basil (and soon strawberry) bottles and let people wonder what it is while it grows. Pretty sure 711 doesn't sell kits with most of the seeds I have. ;)

My pleasure. The Hyponex brand is really popular fertilizer here, which is what they have in that second link; I think it's what I have at home.
 
Spent my lunch break walking around Shibuya and hit something like six convenience stores. No luck! Ah well.
 
Found them for a little over $5 on Amazon (hooray for free shipping), so I ordered a couple. A Canadian friend mentioned 3D printing, which would be a great way to produce this kind of thing very cheaply, so I'm going to see if I have any Serious Connections around here that might have that kind of appliance.
