2019 - The Farm

Well, it's finally time to start. Again. :)

Finished taking inventory of seeds today, and started the 2019 grow list. Since the 24x96' isolation high tunnel is done, I'll be growing a crazy long list this year, as we'll be growing for 2020 seed inventory. With the soil mix equipment, it should be a lot less work on my back this winter! (Even more so if I get the indoor grow areas plumbed and set up on drip irrigation, still not sure I got the budget for that yet tho)

Some of the seeds I'll be pulling from are damn near 10 years old now, so I expect many of these to eventually get crossed off with 0 germination. Everything I have ever saved or traded is getting planted, though. There's 203 on the list right now, many duplicates though where seeds were sourced from more than one person/vendor.

The grow room at home is getting a makeover, going to be "going vertical" to get some space back. More on that in a few days...

This list is not complete yet, I will be adding more after I hear back from a few folks I PM'd.

Most of the lettuce is for taste and local adaptability trials, small little plots. We'll be succession planting out most crops, small qty for market, so "big list, not so big qty."

Some of the stock (various herbs, seedless watermelons) is non-organic seed stock and will either be grown either in the north transitional field or in pots.

570 fruit trees are also coming sometime early spring, those will go in to the dirt as soon as it can be worked after freeze. We'll plant those and forget about them for a few years.. just mow around them. All the big work starts in a few years with those.  Shouldn't need to irrigate them unless we get a big dry spell, and/or until they start producing.

Also.. soon all of the cannabis will be out of the greenhouse and we can FINALLY get back to pepper picture porn!

I have so many peppers with ripe pods in there it's ridiculous. We'll start harvesting seed and doing some test germs soon as our workload diminishes. Getting all of the cannabis in the ground will give us like .. an entire day back on labor...

But speaking of plant pron... I flipped the indoor grow room to get ready to flower last night. Turned the table upside down, potted up 60 plants (20 ea of 5 gal, 7 gal, 10 gal to test yield), ran trellis, and just about wore myself completely out. Some pics I snapped while doing the room.

Cannabis grows so fast. By the time I was working on the last 1/3 of the room (10 gal) the branches on the first 1/3 were already turning up (10 hours later).

Once all of these go out to field I'm going to put pots under the tables, cover with mesh, and do same outdoors.

5TUfz6q.jpg

There's 48 3'x8' tables and 44 4'x8' tables (going in to next 2 greenhouses, figure I'd build them and use them as trellising now)

Looking good Trent can't wait till the day I can buy some of those from you [emoji6]

Took another injury, dislocated ulna when moving mulch layer plows. Muscles got stronger than tendons apparently.

Also I found out I can lift a 4000' roll of 1.25mil plastic one handed and load it on the mulch layer by myself.

Fucking beast mode engaged this weekend.

Sweet jebus, take’er easy out there! A dislocated ulna doesn’t sound fun.

In my dreams. Take care of that ulna!

These hours are kicking my everloving ass.

Might have a new variety cooking here. Gonna label this an F1. Was supposed to be big sun habanero. But .. considering I parked my big sun habanero between a row of Carolina Reaper, and a row of Moruga x Reaper, some crossing was.. inevitable. I mean, for shits sake, the *branches* were entertwined between those rows....

YMwycu4.jpg

JEU4omf.jpg

It has a very, very meaty (I mean THICK) walled pod, incredibly citrus-y (like, MOA flavor perhaps even better), and is definitely an ultrahot. It is a big sun crossed with either Reaper or Moruga Scorpion x Reaper.

One small pod with a a big pan of scrambled eggs about did me in, and definitely paid the price the next morning... MAN they tasted good tho. I didn't even use the top 1/3 of the pepper! Left the placenta and seeds behind on the cutting board...

The surface (hard to see in pic) has hard bumps on it - like sandpaper, almost. The walls were 1/4" thick - hell, the bottom half of the pepper was *solid* flesh. No air.

Definitely a keeper for doing some genetics work on. I will save seeds from this pheno, and try to back-cross against big sun again next growing season to try to get the "big" size back again.

Also, not every day you have a two time Stanley Cup winner drop by the farm for a visit. :)

nu89BUK.png

Not going to name drop here because this site is indexed, and respect his privacy and where he shows up on Google searches, but he was #13 for the 'hawks, also played for Phoenix coyotes, Philadelphia flyers, LA Kings, and New York Rangers.

He's had 168 professional hockey fights as an enforcer ... vs. old farmer Trent (with 30 years of martial arts training).. any takers on odds?

Just because most of you probably don't watch Hockey... you should. :)

Oh I have no doubt he can skate circles around me. I have two left feet when it comes to ice skating, roller skating, etc!

I probably can't jump this high anymore, but don't really need to, I can punch a lot harder with this old man farmer strength ;)

I finally found my limit last night! Proof I'm not superman

R2fdAS8.jpg

192 days of sustained work without a day off. Worked through a stomach bug thurs-fri (16 hours, 20 hours respectively), dealing with vomiting and diarrhea, finally got me behind on the hydration curve enough to get me in trouble, and Saturday I hit the deck. Heart rate was erratic, tachycardic, brachycardic. Took 1 liter of water by mouth and 2 liters by bag to finally settle the heart back down to a normal 55 bpm resting rate.

I fell at the farm, gravity got turned upside down on me. Finally managed to get back up and haul my ass indoors to sit, but everything was feeling off, you know? Fingers tingly and hands uncoordinated, legs heavy when I tried to walk, face tingling, hearing was going, tunnel vision, chest pains. When my wife came in to check on me about 20 mins later I told her to take me to the ER, that something wasn't right. I managed to stagger in to the front desk while she was parking the car, they told me to go to triage room to get signed in, didn't make it. Blacked out and they drug me back to a room and stuck a pipe in me for a refill.

Wifey took a pic so she could remind me when I get stubborn next time lol

I'm taking a half day off this morning to slug water and going back out this afternoon.

Hope you get feeling better, dehydration is a bitch!

Dehydration-heat stroke, are both killers. 40 years ago I got sick from the heat on a Thursday. The next week again on a Thursday, week 3 on Wednesday and spent until Monday in bed. After that I learned to hydrate ahead of the bodies needs, in preparation for what the daily needs were when working on 230° engines in a 117° building in super humid Houston. But I do feel working in the sun is even worse..

I do like it out here further West in the semi desert. Less humidity ;)
