bpiela 2019 New Season, new hope

I was thinking about possibly taking a year off.   Last year was my best year growing but the pepper maggots turned me off so much that I lost interest and left way too many peppers on the plants.  I can't let this happen again.

All this talk about the Sri Lanka Chili Red in the growdown for this season has gotten me pumped up.  I started looking at the ole seed collection and have come up with the start of a plan.  I gotta get those Sri Lankan Reds planted so here is my first group of peppers that I will plant.

Starting with all Chinense and of course a few cells for the Sri Lankas.  Using the same Parks BioDome's that I have used successfully in the past.  60 cells in a 10 row by 6 layout.  I split it down the middle and do 10 rows of 3 cells per pepper.

I am going to start with the "weird" stuff and some old stuff.

Right 10 rows
Agony F2 (Rainbow Chile Seeds)
Armageddon F4 (Rainbow Chile Seeds)
Boze Moj F4 (Rainbow Chile Seeds)
Centurion F1 (Rainbow Chile Seeds)
Ikaraka F2 (Rainbow Chile Seeds)
Insane F4 (Rainbow Chile Seeds)
Carbonero Sherwoods Cream (Walchit)
Ghost White w strain (Walchit)  (what the hay is a w strain?)
JPGS (Walchit)
Swamp Thing (Walchit)
Left 10 rows
Sri Lanka Chili Red  (Woot!)
Griefer  (Gnarly Pods)
Aryana's Chocolate Naga Viper (Gnarly Pods)
Yellow Stinger GP (Gnarly Pods)
Carolina Reaper (Juanitos)
White Bullet Habanero (Juanitos)  I love these!
Devil's Brain (Pepperlover)
Douglah Red (Pepperlover)
Trinidad Scorpion Butch T (ButchT.com)
I Scream Scropion (ButchT.com)

This is just a start.  Lots more to go.

Yeah, some I've never heard of.
Very exotic  :drooling:  sounding, Ben,

Can't wait for season to roll into
full swing to see them!

Yeah, a bunch of weirdly named peppers from Rainbow Chile Seeds.  Looks like the guy there does a ton of his own crosses and then gives them exotic names.  I don't know what I will get but it will be fun trying.

I'll be watching to make sure you
don't grow anything too dangerous

And, I'll be looking for some great pics
from you when they get rolling!

Started potting up some seedlings.

Yep, got 80 varieties so far.  A couple didn't germinate at all.  My goal is around 150 varieties.  Still got annuums and baccatums to plant.  That will happen next month.
Pretty darn ambitious, Ben. Should be a terrific grow

Some updates.  Its been just about two weeks since I dropped the Pubescens seeds and I haven't gotten any of them to pop yet.  What do people normally see with the pubes germination?    On my third group of chinense seeds, I was having poor germination plus some fungus started growing.  I tried to hit it with some H2O2 but I was lazy and I didn't cut it with water, so I lost a few seedlings.  Not too proud of that move.  I threw down some baccatum/frutescens seeds today, also including a short list of annuums.  That list is the following:

Baccatums:
Aji Amarillo
Aji Cito
Aji Fantasy
Aji Golden
Aji Melocoton
Aji Penec
Aji Pineapple
Malawi Piquante
Peachadew
Peruvian Giallo Arancio

Frutescens:
Cabai Burung Ungu
Duke Pequin
Aji Caballero

Praetermissium:
Cumari Parana

Annuum:
SSE #2090 (No real clue what this is.  Got the seeds from the Scorched Seed Train in 2015)
Stavros Pepperoncini
PI224411 (got these seeds from a pod from Wicked Mike a few years back)
Purple Cayenne
Tatli Sus
Thai Adaptive Early

Great list of unusual varieties, Ben. Will be
lots of fun to watch you develop this grow.

"What do people normally see with the pubes germination? "

I have had some success with certain varieties
like the Peruvian Red Rocoto, but less with some
others. It's good you are trying a bunch to see
which really likes your climate.

As for germination, they can be stubborn germinators.
With the heating mat, I usually get hooks in 6-12 days.
Fresh seed is a good idea for these guys. And I soak
the black seeds overnight.

Thought I would bring this back to life.  I did a horrible job on the glog.  Had bad germ rates this year.  Lost a lamp and tried to get around not replacing it.  Lost a few plants due to neglect.  Didn't stake my plants properly when putting them outside to harden.  Just things that I did where you can see that my motivation was low.  Anyways, I got peppers in the dirt and I am happy with how things are right now in the garden.  I threw in a few marigold plants to liven up the atmosphere a bit.  Here are a couple of pics for either side of the garden.  Plants are close together, but I don't mind doing that.  I like to cram in as many as I can...

Quite a crew there, Ben!

Have fun crawling around in the jungle
when gathering pods!

Good luck going forward now that you
have everything back on an even keel...

I don't seem to have a list of what I is in the garden at this time so I figure I need to put one in the glog.  If I bought the plant from someone, I will include that in parenthesis after the plant name.  Otherwise, I grew it from seed.  From the pics above, if I start with the first row after the marigolds....

Gotta agree with Scott - you have a regulation
grow going there, Ben!

Its about time I posted some pics.  Just started picking ripe annuums.  I have one ripening chinense pod which I have a pic of.

For starters, here is a pic of a Bonnie's Cowhorn.  Gonna have to stake this one.  A Bonnie's Cajun Bell in the background.
3PPHJpH.jpg

Next is a Paradicsum Alaku.  Got these seeds off of the seed train last year.  Growing true!
TP8MS4W.jpg

This next pic is of a Tatli Sus in the foreground and a Rosemary pepper in the background.  The Tatli Sus pods grow straight up, but for some reason, when they ripen for me, they seem to be either rotting or drying out.  Kinda like what some people are seeing with the growndown plants...

A Malawi Piquante.  These plants seem to grow very tall.

This is a Bhut x Brainstrain #2 that I got seeds from Walchit.
2YHsK4Q.jpg

Here is a Yellow Stinger, seeds from Gnarly Pods.  It is starting to ripen.  Bad angle, cannot see the mini stinger.
OYmSNSK.jpg

Another from Gnarly Pods is the Griefer.  These pods are big.

And here is a pic of an Ikaraka F2 from Rainbow Chile Seeds.  Cool looking.

Last pic for today.  This is from a Devil's Brain seed pack I still had from Pepperlovers.  I think there might have been two phenos.  This one is smooth.  I have another Devil's Brain from the same pack of seeds that didn't make it into the garden where the pods are showing the same shape but are bumpy, which I think is the desired pheno.  But, these are starting to ripen so I will be able to try these soon.  Sorry for the blurriness.  I am not a good photographer.
