Pepper X

Here is another scary thought. As soon as Ed releases pepper x seeds, (the "reliable" source) how many people are going to buy it? When they released the reaper, they sold 120,000 seeds at $1 a piece, in the first 3 months. How many pepper x seeds do you think they would sell? Then, how long will it take for everyone to find out they aren't as hot as expected? Everyone will have some sort of plant. They wouldn't get their money back. They could be beefing up some BMMs over the last couple of years and sell $250k worth of seeds before anyone realized they aren't 3.17 million. Look at the reaper. It has the record at 2.2 million but nobody has ever had one tested above 1.6 something. Not even the Hot Pepper Institute could do better, yet alone all the hobbyists. Is anyone complaining or suing them because their reapers aren't what they are supposed to be? At this rating, the math says that people would be equally happy with a mustard that rates 2.3 million. These people know how to use the press and manipulate people to buy into what they have. Keep in mind they just used "chocolate pepper x" in the last version of last dab, so they have 2 kinds of seeds to sell you that might not perform. Alright, everyone line up to buy your pepper x seeds!!! You know you will at least try a few packs, just in case. It's from "the reliable source"!!!

Seems legit.

Ok in another thread about a Kambuzi pepper, someone posted a Wikipedia link about that pepper. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kambuzi  , on the page under Cultivars it lists the mysterious "Pepper X". So it must exist (?).
Here are 2 more links concerning the Pepper X.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pepper_X  and https://www.chilipeppermadness.com/news/pepper-x-latest-news-and-information/. Seems like alot of hype for a Fairytale(?) Pepper or is all this Fake News? Lol.

I don't even understand why people see Ed as a reliable source at this point. Any degree of reading around will tell you that other chilli farms have far more consistent Reapers than he does. If I'm gonna get ripped off buying Pepper X seeds, at least I can claim that I did it first by going somewhere independant and not fund his explotative bullcrap.
After all, one of you guys sent me real Caramel Reaper seeds long before Ed had any for sale so, in my mind, a legit Pepper X, should such a thing even exist, is just as likely to pop up in some random 3rd party's collection as it is to come from him.

Totally agree: had Reaper and Chocolate Bhutlah from PB, which is supposed to have them for exclusive, and both turned out inconsistent.
Never buying from the guy again.

You do know that even Wikipedia has a post that Wikipedia material is unreliable?> Wikipedia:Wikipedia is not a reliable source

Wikipedia can be edited by anyone at any time. This means that any information it contains at any particular time could be vandalism, a work in progress, or just plain wrong.

Just sayin'.....

Lol even if the legendary "Pepper X" turns out to be real, I for one am not buying any. When you get over 1 mil scovils it doesn't matter. I have plenty of Scorps, 7 Pots, Bhuts etc already. My cross between a Peach Bhut and a Trinidad Scorpion really comes across hotter than my Reapers, but im not sending any off to be officially "tested".

I agree. Once we're anywhere in "Super" territory, it's hot enough to become all academic, to me. I am just always looking for hardy plants that produce a lot of pods with delicious and interesting favorites. Red 7Brainstrains are my go-to for all of that, but I like trying other stuff, just to satiate my curiosity.

Personally, I've never been a fan of how most Mustard-chiles pods taste, but I have to admit that they look cool. So maybe I'll grow something in the Mustard hue-- but it won't be Pepper X.

If straight pain is what you're after, you don't even want a pure chinense, IMO. The stinging heat of an annuum or bacatum is, scoville for scoville, significantly harder to endure, meaning that chinense annuum crosses like the various Bhut de Neyede strains can be absolutely unbearable when their genetics come through a certain way. Though the soapy quality that comes with also puts me right off.

I can only speak for myself, but straight pain is not what I'm after. I do want to grow some kinda heavyweight Superhot, but I don't NEED anything much hotter than a red Bhut Jolokia. I am mostly a Junky who craves that chinense skunk. And yeah, you can get it from the low heat varieties, and I DO appreciate those, but somehow it just ain't the same til you creep up past that 1,000,000shu mark... At least, that's been my experience.

I hear you about the annuum thing. I swear, a good Jalapeño kicks my ass harder than most Hab- level chinense. Annuums are weird bc they don't hurt that bad, but they make me hiccup, cough, cry, and freak out far more than a lot of chiles that are hotter on paper.

I imagine these crosses that mix big chinense SHUs with annuum effects would really rock my world..

These chinense / annuum, and possibly frutescens ?crosses
All seem way hotter to me than i initially expected; but only to about half of the other people that I've seen try them, did they seem comparable to other superhots they had tried before.
i suspect the capsaicinoid profile included from the annuum / chinense cross is something that doesn't effect everyone nearly equally and hits me and a few others with much more lasting intensity.
even though many would probably not measure nearly as hot on SHU conversion alone.

An interesting topic of its own
How various capsaicinoids blends affect individuals differently than pure capsaicin alone.

I will say, also, that the Pink Tiger (same parents as "The Pain") didn't hit me anywhere near as hard. Its heat took after its Ghost parents. It takes a special blend of annuum capsaicinoid production and chinense production levels to really get the job done.

Do you two also find a certain soap-like quality alongside that annuum heat? From what I understand, that's another thing that only some people get and I have to wonder if the two are connected.

not soap, but with many of the purple varieties: I find them to have a bitter taste that i associate with other purple solanaceae ie; eggplant / aubergine, huckleberry, purple chilis, even purple potatoes
(these purple pepper crosses that start off really dark,  taste; "Purple" to me   ) until they are no longer partly purple and fully ripe.
i can only guess it to be a taste i associate with "purple anthocyanins"

What if it's delicious? The focus of any food should be flavor. Heat should be secondary.

People will work with it and make delicious things with it, if given a reason, but, so far, Pepper X has proven to be neither especially good nor bad in taste, IMO. Simply different to the more common supers.
I see no particular reason to go for it on flavour grounds, over the countless other uncommon strains out there.

Have you considered that this sauce, which is purported to be made from a chile that no one has ever seen, that was supposed to secure a record it has never yet earned, that has been the subject of lore for a while yet there are no seeds available-- have you considered it might be made from some other chile?

Maybe a few different chiles, as the color did change dramatically at one point?

Just a thought.
After all, I was SHOCKED to find out that Jack Link didn't even make this jerky from real Yeti meat.
