Deolater 2019

Howdy all, new guy to the forum here. This will be my second year growing hot peppers. Last year I got into the hobby when a friend gave me some of his extra plants. It was a ton of fun and I had some good results, but this year I'm going all in.

I started out in those Jiffy trays, and started 5 cells of each variety, for 100 total.

This is way more than I can grow, but I've got scars from last year when I only had one plant of each variety. I'll probably be begging people to take some of these off my hands are some point.


The first tray of ~50 are now in Solo cups under a grow light in a tent in my basement, and the second tray is mostly sprouted.

I live in a wooded suburban neighborhood, so while I have plenty of space outside, I don't have a lot of space that also gets light. I'm hoping I'll be able to keep about 25 total plants, with some in ground and some in containers.

Good luck with the BJ Chocolate. One of my favorite
peppers for powder!
 
Seedlings look like they are doing fine, couple of sets
of true leaves and rarin' to get out in the Georgia sun!

Right now I've got a dense fog advisory (sure is foggy) and a flood watch!

I'm going to have to give powders a try this year, assumoi get a good harvest. Last year I grew a nice little reaper tree, but only about 25 pods.

So there wasn't a lot left after a couple of sauces and general culinary use.

Looking at that picture reminds me what good luck I had with Serrano. Maybe I should add another to my list.

Unlike Reddit where everything is a habanero.

That said, I'm 95% sure I only saved seeds from Lemon Drop, Ghost, and Reaper, so it should be one of those. But maybe I'm remembering wrong. After all, I thought "I don't need to label these, I'll remember what they are".

Paul mentioned overwintering, so I guess I'll share my mixed success from last year.

When people say to prune your peppers before OW, they mean it. I didn't want to lose the 15ish green pods on the plant, so I didn't cut it back. The plan was that I would set up a grow tent and overwinter under lights. Sadly an enormous number of aphids appeared, I trimmed too late, and, well...
 
These aphids seemed immune to neem.
 
On the bright side, my two baccatums are doing great. The Lemon Drop is even still producing pods in my garage with just the light of a small window. The Bishop's Crown barely grew during the season, but has gotten bigger in the garage.

I'm hoping they'll both do well this year.
 
Maybe it's the overmothering club again, but I'm concerned about my Ramiros.

Their leaves are curling and one of them has bumps on the stem;

Scrape the bark off the stem lightly.
If it is still green derneath, just cut
the Reaper back and it will grow
out new growth at the leaf nodes.
Leave 8-10 nodes on the stem for
the new growth.

Today I saw a tiny leaf starting to form at one of the nodes, so I guess it's still alive!

I also found and killed an aphid after a couple months of reprieve.
