StettoGro '19: In For a Dime

76....In English that would be ALMOST TWICE AS DAMNED MANY AS LAST YEAR.

Ah well, Last year I dwelled on downsizing, this year I must have assumed it would be automatic.

I argued with myself over whether to glog at all this year, other than to carry over noobishness from the last two seasons I don't have that much to offer...But everyone loves to see a Zone 3 die-hard gardener scratch and claw his way through a short season!!

Anyhow, this is how my week started---I was particularly proud of my innovative use of the pill caddy....

Soakin seeds.jpg

That was the first "load", almost all black seeds. The next day the yellow seeds went in while the black ones found their nests. The sad thing is the seeds I didn't put in; the Paprika and the Urfa Biber and the Aji Limo and the and the and the...Until that damned greenhouse gets itself magically erected I gotta limit myself.

OK, at least one of each Pubescen is going into fivers or larger containers. So will the best of the Pimenta De Neyde x Bonda Ma Jacques and my Sri Lanka Chilli Red competitor and what long season peppers I can. What goes into the 8th acre this year will be treated to a till-less grow, it's at least worth a try. Most of the anuums will be out there.

For what it's worth, here is the current state of my grow....

Great to hear that the day trips are coming soon. It feels good to get the plants out of the house even if just during the day, plus the natural sun seems to do them a lot of good.  And good luck with the "audition."  Gigging's not a bad way to pay for your dirt.

Heh, the audition was kind of a bust. The guy said that they "went to a lot of bluegrass festivals", he didn't say that he meant AS AUDIENCE. They were nice guys, but I don't see them doing a lot of gigging anytime soon...

Plus 1 on #139!

That, and you guys up in the frozen North may start later (some are just starting dirt day, as I reel them in) but you do, do better for the most part than I do here production wise. Maybe I need to put 2 and 1/2 foot plants out next March, that or do some serious research, which I have yet to find..LOL

Scott, I sure hope you're right on that production-wise remark.  Just for the PT, it's officially the old folks' first day out of Spring!! Aji Amarillo (3), Aji Mango (3), LO Thai (second summer), all my non-Pubescent OWs. It's supposed to get upwards of 60 degrees, but nighttime lows are gonna be iffy for a time...

Sorry about the audition, man.

Heh, thanks, it does happen, but at my age I figured more of the old guys calling with a need for my skills would be a little more seasoned on their instruments. Like I said, they're nice guys, and I'll probably enjoy a little play time with them, but it's difficult holding back when they want to play 'Mama Tried' and I'm all set for 'Red Barchetta'...

Oh, and they not only had no drummer, but had no intention to find one....

Perhaps you can enlighten them, and bring a drummer? That is if they have the rest of their shiznaz in order...

Edit: Cuz I just have to.. The at my age thang..LOL...I'm still trying to remember "my age" 'aint working!

The Big Apple Red Rocoto that had that "rash" is back in the news: I think we can safely attribute direct sunlight.

Here is before, flash/no flash, from April 12:

And after 8 days in well-lit shade:

Everyone but Rocotos are outside today in 65° of bright & shiny wonderful. You'd had to have gone through my winter to really understand...

It's going to be a GREAT season, dammit....

Naa Scott, it just isn't my thing anymore to take any kind of charge, those days are done. I just wanted to play and cash a small check now and then. I'll piddle around with them until something else oozes out of the woodwork. They have an interesting set list, almost every tune is in G...

Glad to see the Big Apple Red Rocoto has
bounced back with a little change in venue.

Maybe you can see the ground a little better
these days. Bet you are looking forward to
warmer weather, buddy, hope you get it soon!

I'm going to be less active here for a bit due to a family issue (hate that effking word some days), but I'll try and update now and again...

Here's a progress pic of my Anuums & Chinense. I actually have 3 P Dreadies successfully sown, they are (for me) a very delicate variety to keep healthy and happy. I've got 2 Sri Lanka Chilli Reds, and 2 PdeNXBmaJ, 1 each white & violet in there somewhere, all craving some more of the great outdoors. It's back to 30s & 40s this week, we're all cooped up again...

20190429_093234.jpg

And my new Pubes, some doing much better (Big Apple Red, Gelbe Riesen) than others. This is me, downsizing (?) from last year. The OWs are here too, but they are the same as last time, so no pics for you....

20190429_094250.jpg

One of my OWs, an Aji Largo Rocoto, came down with an aphid infestation and in the process of eradicating the little peckersnots I must have oversaturated with Pyrethrins. Every leaf on 'er dropped within a couple days. But zey bugz in zey boosh? POOF!! That was a couple weeks ago, and I had the carcass in a dark isolated corner, procratinating tossing it out, and this morning I picked it up and....

Sometimes the tenacity is to amaze. She's under the LEDs now, regenerating. I'm going to repot, I just have to decide whether to do it now or after she leafs back up....

Thanks for stopping.

Hope all turns out ok on the family side of things Eric, which is far more important imo then the pepper or the forum, so until then you tkaecare good sir

It's a Cycle of Life thing, Matt, they don't tend to work out great...My dad was enrolled in Hospice last week, his time is short. I do appreciate the thought.

Hell, I might have it backwards and will be checking in here for the relief & release of the anxiety involved with dealing with siblings and non-family members much more often.

Today when I was looking at a pack of Thyme seeds, it said that Thyme repels aphids. Same with Chives and Garlic.

Last year, I planted a few cloves of garlic into every pepper plant pot as well as with my cucumbers, squash and tomatoes. Only time I saw aphids was before the garlic sprouted. I handled that with some soap and warded them off. Chives are supposed to work even better, against more pests than garlic. Might switch to using chives this year. Thyme is a bit too opportunistic, needs it's own container.

I might try the chives. We use a lot of them as it is...

It looks like a repeat of last year's shit spring, today won't find 50° with both hands, cold drizzle....So the kids are housebound still.

My Anuums and Chinense are looking pretty healthy, but smaller than most of yours, even though Dirt Day is supposedly in 3 short weeks.

20190508_133134.jpg

And from the other side you may see a couple runts: not to worry, they're just Bells..I had 3 P. Dreadies but gave one to a local hab grower who was curious. I bet he's more than just curious next year!

20190508_133200.jpg

I'm feeling awful fortunate to have a Darlin' Bride who recognizes my pepper endeavors as therapeutic, because they are taking over the house. Mixed in with the children are my OWs in shiny new 12 inch pots. I've ordered a dozen 5 gallon fabric pots to compliment my 5 gallon plastic "bag" pots, a number of 5 gallon paint buckets and a few 10 & 20 gallon pots from the nurseries. My Baccatum and LOT OWs are looking sparse, I think they crave some time under the sun instead of looking for it out a window...

The Rocotos are kind of overwhelming. But they're for the most part robust and some are trying to grow out of their cups. I need some summerishness.

Flowers is nice. Setting fruit is orgasmic.

Last pic. I had just one plant with aphids this winter, an Aji Largo Rocoto. I hit it with Pyrethrins and the bugs disappeared. Then so did every last leaf. I trimmed it down to near stump status and absent mindedly plopped it into a very dark corner of the sitting room. I think I posted a pic just recently, shortly after I discovered she wa'nt quite dead.

I transplanted her into a 12 inch summer home yesterday

So here I sit, willing some Spring weather to move in. Some of the guessers claim 72° by Monday, but I quit listening to those fools. TWC says we'be skirting 60 for the foreseeable future. Don't ask about forecast lows, I might have to come down there...

Awright, back to scheduled programming!
