Smoke Somethin

Got this char-griller premium kettle for my birthday, it says its a smoker too.

So after a little research and about 40 bucks for charcoal baskets and a pizza stone I'm gonna give it a shot.

Modified grate out of my old grill, had to cut the sides off, and hit it with a hammer a couple times so it would get past these bolts.

Forgot to add the apple wood, it wasn't that bad to open everything back up. Glad I took out some of the center of the old grate.

Iron mikes mustard Bbq for a binder and Montreal steak, some minced onions, salt and pepper on the rub.

Thanks Mike! All the bbq you pump out definitely made me want to make some of my own! The Halloween block party really had me jealous over here!

Been helping a friend change a transmission all weekend, so I havent gotten to fire up the grill at all. Maybe tomorrow I will make something cool for you guys!
 
So I made some chicken but forgot to take pics, so it kinda didn't happen...

Well I guess I got a raw picture. Forgot about Gip's sweet heat rub until I already put some other stuff on them. The legs were really good, dried the breast out cause I forgot to tell my wife to shut the oven off after it got warmed up.

I had to run down the street to this welder and have him tack the legs back on my new Weber. He was worrying me with the grinder so I had him stop. I still need to smooth out the welds so the one touch ash sweep will work right. Its a 22.5". It was out of round when I got it, the lid would only fit if you had the oval shape positioned perfectly. So I looked at it to determine where the long part was, and just used the ground and pushed to bend it back to shape.

Making some live edge oak handles for it, and I painted the ash pan black. I might do the legs black too, not sure if it will look weird though.

Not very good at before and after pics, but here is one after I disassembled johnny number 5.

Rusted through legs, I thought webers lasted longer, I know there are a lot of people with ones much older than this. Maybe the older ones were built better, or when this one got damaged it messed up the porcelain coating.

Here are the new welds, you can see where he was getting the bowl a little so I had him stop.

Hit it with some high temp paint to hopefully keep rust at bay. Flat black on a gloss grill but oh well. I painted the ash pan then put a coat of gloss rustoleum over it, hopefully it doesnt burn off lol.

I want one of those cajun bandit stackers for it, will probably just cut up a 55 gal drum for a riser. It will be a really cheap smoker when I'm done with it.

The internet is really a great learning device if you know how to use it. Like I don't have a 55 gal drum to see if it would work, but if you look hard enough, someone has already done what I'm thinking about(usually)

Then if you scour some more, you see different things that different people have already done, and get to see pros and vons, and ideas you wouldnt have thought of otherwise while still sitting in your house.

And I just figured I would find the most toxic barrel I could, and hope it gives me some unique tasting meat. And maybe a unique new growth somewhere on my body lol.

A guy on Craigslist has barrels, when I asked what was in them he said nothing toxic, or something along those lines.

Does anyone know if you can use the high temp grill paint on the inside of a grill? Or will it produce fumes if it gets to a certain temp? I would like to do something for the welds on the inside of the kettle, to help prevent the legs from rusting off again. Maybe just put cooking oil on there and try to "season" it? Hell Idk!

Nice find and good repairs, keep that up and you'll have a backyard full before you know it.
 
Don't paint the inside ever. Season it with oil and fire it up preferably with some fatty meat so it gets seasoned. I would clean the whole thing and reseason so I know that it's good.
 
 
Also try to keep water out of it and that should solve your problem, that's probably why it rusted out to begin with. When I say water I also mean don't let the pit sit with ash in it to collect moisture.
 
 
On the mod you want to do: Yes the lid will fit a barrel and that's the beginning of a UDS. You might have to bolt or weld a piece of flat stock around the barrel to make a good seal for the lid and/or bottom but it's certainly doable.

They were in pretty rough shape, but I had my buddy take me all the way there, so I offered 60 and he took it. They were all full of ash, so I don't k ow how bad they really are, but I figured they are probably worth 15 a piece. Time will tell I guess.

I usually forget the before picture, but here is at least a group shot. I will try to get a couple more tomorrow, and maybe get them cleaned up.

The jumbo Joe and the black kettle aren't too bad. Might try to get rid of the jumbo Joe. I cleaned It up pretty good.

The grey and the red both need their leg sockets welded. But I got the welds ground down smooth on the first one, sprayed it with olive oil and ran a small fire in it. Pretty sure its ready to go. Gotta get a couple new ash sweepers, had to use the grinder to get the old ones off.

They look like they have never been cleaned, maybe never had the ashes dumped lol. Had to use a chisel to get the charcoal, grease, ash out of the grey one. Used a gallon of degreaser, still need a lot more elbow grease, cause I don't wanna cook on a nasty old grill lol.

I got the redhead put back together today, there sure was a lot of crud in these things, I have them as close to spotless as I could.

These handles were in a little worse shape than the others, and I think they had stain on them that I didn't get all the way off.

Lots of wear and tear, but she turned out pretty good.
 
Made these "Moink" type of things. The small ones are for the kids, sausage and hamburger with bacon around them, salt and pepper(ground white pepper, cause if they see any seasoning they say its spicy)

On the bigger ones I wrapped the meat around a square of cream cheese and a square of Colby Jack, draped bacon over the top and hit it with G.I.P's sweet heat rub.

Then they are the two bell peppers stuffed with the remaining cheese/cream cheese, bacon skewered to the sides, and a little of G.I.I.P's smoked Serrano powder on top.

Went ahead and threw them on the char griller, cause I know I can cook right with it. I need to get the extensions made for the webers, or get some fire bricks and run them with 2 zones or whatever.

Gonna fry up some of these morels tonight to go with them.
