So another "not" pepper.

This one is a Not Gator Gigsaw.
Seriously over not getting what I ordered. More thsn 50% of my recent seed purchases ended up being other than expected.

Fuck that! I'd send seeds if it wasn't so late in the year, I'd send you seeds. I don't have Gator Jigsaws, but you could at least be sure they were saved from the pepper it was labeled as.

If anyone here IS growing those, order an SFRB and save seeds.

Who have you been ordering from?

Yeah, whoever it is, make sure to comment in their Vendor Vault thread. A few crosses in non-isolated seeds is just par for the course, but 50%+ is really not acceptable.

I havent seen any vendors selling Gator Jigsaw even Isolated past F4
(if you find one, let me know, i'd like to compare to the ones i have been growing and selecting since F2)
I think this one is still fairly new anyway and going to have some variability still.

How many plants of these Gator Jigsaw did/do you have ?
Do those plants look the same even though they don't look like Gators ?
Do you think you were sold mislabeled seeds, or just accidentally some random OP cross ?

I bought a bunch of non-ISO seeds from my favorite value-priced, transparent-about-open-pollination seed vendor, WHP. Last year, they all grew true except for two plants. I had a BOC plant throwing red pods and looked like maybe a BOC had crossed with some kind of 7pot the year before. And, I had a JPGS that produced red pods that looked kinda like Brazil Starfish but they tasted like Chinense and we're on hab-level heat. The plants had those unique JPGS leaves, looking wavy and elongated and study, so the off-pheno pods surprised me.

Bottom line, it was just the two plants, out of dozens. And, I grew multiple plants of each variety, so I still got true JPGS and BOC pods. The off-pheno/"not" pods were still delicious. In fact, my one buddy saved seeds from the not-jpgs pods, bc he apparently really liked them... But I bet he lost them or washed them on his jeans or some shit, bc I haven't heard about them since.

I understand the frustration of a grow going differently from how ya planned, but in the end, this is supposed to be about fun. Just eat those peppers and chalk this up to a lesson learned... Right?

I hear you..., it's just that I had crossing projects planned for these, and a white 7pod, and a PDN, which didn't come true either.

I totally understand, and I know I'd be pissed too, bc that's a big setback for your plans. But I also think i'd be happy to eat those chiles, even if they weren't what I'd anticipated. They look delicious.

I've only been growing peppers for three years now, but I learned pretty early on in that first year that the phrase "there's always next year..." becomes a mantra of sorts. I'm already making tons of notes about what I'll do instead in 2020, and ut don't even have plants in the ground yet..

I don't think you realize this is part of the problem and also contributes to the issue, cross pollinated seeds. Just because the pod you took the seeds from is a phenotype correct shape/size/color of "Blastmaster's Lip Buzzin' Chocolate 7-Pot", if the seeds come from a non-isolated plant the strain can be compromised causing thegreenman's issue. What I'm saying is, when you receive a SFRB of pods as you have, see pic below, unless you know the original seeds were saved from a "pure" strain and grown isolated, each seed can be bastardized by both the gene influences the original pod had, the F1 version the grower used, and the F1 version of the pod you received.

Just sayin'.....

I've been talking this shit for a minute now, but I want to start rocking indoor grows, a few varieties at a time, so i can truly isolate plants and get some 100% certain shit. Planting in a somewhat remote bed isn't doing it for me, at least as far as my paranoid ocd goes....

But I think i read in a couple places that >80% of open-pollinated chile seeds will grow true, bc peppers are self-pollinating and the closest blossoms are likely to be from the same plant anyway. Not sure if it's true, but those pods are good enough for me and my semi-casual hobbyist needs. Obviously, not nearly good enough for legit control freaks on the hobby level, nor for commercial growers. But when u first started growing, I remember being certain that everything i saved seeds from was going to produce unpredictable crosses. So far, everything I've saved seeds from has grown true for me (knock on wood; I'm working with a larger sample size this year, too) and the vast majority of what I've grown from vendors who sell open-pollinated seeds have grown true, too... The exceptions being the not-jpgs and not-boc I mentioned above.

I'm just thinking "out loud" & not trying to make concrete assertions, but if no one is selling Gator Jigsaws past f4, isn't it possible that this might just be a result of growing out an as-of-yet unstable new cross? Like, might this have happened even with isolated f4 seeds?

Very true guys, I remember guru showing us the chart with the pheno variations base on generations and the percentage of reproducing like kind. Ill hunt it down for ya, I know that the amount of pollinators will affect cross likelihood. Personally I like the ol put a wedding rice toss bag over the branches and isolate.

mine is f3 so Im definitely curious to see if the next generation grows out like we see in pics online.

I agree with Rob that it may a delicious cross, youll have to let us know its taste profile.

Heres gurus notes which I think are pretty much close to the correct numbers. Hopefully he doesnt beat me for using this off the FB group :seeya:
Interesting! While there are many genus in the solanaceae family, which includes tomatoes, tomatillos, eggplant, bell peppers and chili peppers, this treatise is for tomatoes so it applies to all.> Tomato Gene Basics

If you go to page two and scroll down to the 3 row "chart" the top line is basically the same as gurus notes:
genotypic   -  ratio 1:2:1 - 1 dominate : 2 heterozygotes : 1 recessive
                                          25% dominate | 50% heterozygous | 25% recessive

Now you don't have to steal gurus notes!

Of my 4 Jabooty (Bhut brown x Jamaican Bird) F2s to produce pods, I have gotten 1 brown, 2 reds, and 1 that is peachy white and appears to be seedless and sterile, judging by the first two pods to ripen fully. The original cross only produced 5 seeds and only 1 sprouted. The F1s pods are uniformly a mix of bhut and bird.
