PaulG 2019 - Three Gallon Grow

Decided to put links to my other threads in the first post
of my new threads so I can find them easily when looking for
information. Did that this year on the first page and it is
very handy:

So, this thread is sort of a sub-thread to my regular 2019 Grow Log.

I am growing ten plants in 3-gallon pots this season.

Thinking about this because I want to be able to move
them in and out of the garage or greenhouse this Fall in
order to extend the season. Plus, I am not sure how much
longer I want to wrestle with the big containers. Even wet
10-gallon pots are getting heavier each year, and always
having to get help to lift the big containers in and out of their
saucers is getting to be a drag.

This thread will concentrate on just the 3-gallon plants. If I
can get decent production from a 3-gallon Pot, that would
be great. I think that will be the case based on my grow of
the Aji Amarillo plants in 2-gallon pots in 2017.

The ten plants included in this mini-grow:
  • JA Red Habanero
  • Yellow Scorpion
  • SLR cross
  • Aji Amarillo
  • Peruvian Red Rocoto
  • Chiltepin
  • Goats Weed
  • c. chacoense
  • BJ Hybrid (3-inch pod)
  • ? - probably Mark's (Dragon49) PdNxBJ if it arrives healthy and I can get it going!.

Looking down at the BJ x PdN:

Thanks Sandy!

You are right on both (all three?) counts!

Lovely pod shots, thanks! Glad to hear the weather is finally picking up in your neck of the woods!

Looking great there! I'm also doing a lot of 3 gallon pots, Root Pouch fiber pots.

This is Jukka's cross between Duke Baccatum X PI260567 (Wish I could find the place to look those index numbers up.. PI is for Pepper Institute, I thought someone said?) Over 50 pods on this duo already. Really not sure I'm feeding it enough.

Those re great looking plants, Crafty! Pretty amazing
what can grow in a 3-gallon pot. I have used the root
pouches in the past and really liked them.

The foliage is beautiful, love the purple with some green on the new growth!
It is a beauty, all right. The forks have extended
an inch or two since that pic was taken.

One reservation I have about the 3 gallon bags is they aren't really stand-alone and become really top heavy if you let the plants grow.. Maybe with rock in the bottom. This is an idea I'm currently working on for a base stand, to be used in isolation.
I'd like to do a longer version for multiple plants, and maybe 6" mesh fencing for sides.. Like a troth, and with a liner in the bottom to hold some water. The sandbox works nice for smaller plants.

They's all lookin' mighty good, boys!

I know this is a 3 gallon thread, but I had to get a ya-ya out for my one gallon gals. Darn things are even flowering!

Left-to-right: Papa Dreadie SB, Antake (yeah, I can't wait to see also), Aji Arnaucho & Giant Yellow Rocoto.

I was getting ready to pack my 2 gallon pots away never to be used again, but I swear there's not a whole lot of difference between my 2gal, 2.5gal, and 3 gallon plants. In fact the Hungarians seem to prefer the smaller pot.
Interesting observation, TG. I am always amazed by
how much plant can grow in a smaller pot!
