Potting Up Question

Question is.....Can I pot up from a solo cup to a 5 gallon container?
I have one plant left indoors that was a late sprouter that is in a solo cup. It is a Jay's chocolate ghost/scorpion cross and has four sets of true leaves and I would like to get it outdoors.
Earlier in the season I was at a garden shop buying used 1 gallon containers and the person there mentioned to always go from the small solo cups to the 1 gallon size containers and not straight to the 5 gallon containers. I don't remember the reason for this since my mind was probably elsewhere at the time!

yes you can go to any size container.

untangle some of the roots if they are rootbound

I did pot up from red solo cups to 5 gallon buckets. Plants are doing good.

So you say saiias, but I feel it's been a while since I've seen any update pics of your blue bucket brigade to support your claim.

On topic, sometimes a big pot-up can make watering properly more difficult because there's so much soil in the container that is nowhere near roots. The soil can then sit wet and create issues unlike a raised bed or the ground where drainage is better and less compacting and such tends to occur. The bigger the pot up, the more I'd say be more careful as to proper watering and media composition. But a well-developed plant in an 18oz solo to a 5g bucket shouldn't be bad.

Step ups too small can create issues too, because the plant shifts its energy into growing roots into the new space, then when it's ready to focus on foliage growth again it didn't develop much additional root mass to support much additional foliage growth. Then it's time to pot up again and the process is repeated,with the plant wasting a lot of growth time switching back and forth for limited growth at each step. I'd usually aim for 1 step between a solo and 5g, but sure don't think it's necessary.

I've always gone from nursery pots straight into it's final pot with no issues. It's no problem

Thanks for the replies. I'll be moving it to a 5 gallon grow bag probably tomorrow. The weather is calling for possible storms today so I'll wait.

Between work trips, Kid's activities, taking care on plants and garden, I am not finding time to take pictures.
