A Bhut is bigger than a naga.

Some sources say that bhut jolokia, bih jolokia, naga jolokia and naga morich are the same strain. But 'cos they are grown in different areas of India (the names also come from the different Indian languages and mean about the same) with different climatic and soil circumstances they vary in number of flowers per node and size of the pods. Maybe a few years and generations later they will stabilize as different varieties. Some say they already have. Only DNA-analysis could tell. Maybe NMSU Chile Pepper Institute knows details. I didn't find it on their site though.
AJ, Potawie: You are growing more than one of those and as far as I read they still are different on the same soil and under the same climate. How long have you been growing them and have they aligned over the years? Maybe follow up watch over the next few years will tell more.

I grew Bih and Bhut Jolokia, Naga Morich and Dorset Naga this year...the Bih Jolokias were not true strains since none of the pods had the typical elongated conical shape...the Bhuts, Naga Morich and Dorset Nagas grew true to form with the Bhuts being the largest, and the Dorsets producing more than the Naga Morich did....
all were extreme in the heat catagory...in 2009, I am going to grow the holy quintity (Bhut Jolokia, Naga Jolokia (chinense), Dorset Naga, Bih Jolokia, and Naga Morich)...all seeds coming from reliable sources...except maybe the Naga Jolokia....that is the pepper I got while down in Key West this past May...It had the pod shape of the others but was a little smaller...this was my first year and for one reason or another the plants produced at different times....the Naga Morich were started January 1, 2008 and produced about May, the Bhuts and Dorsets (started 30 January 2008) both were set back several months because of severe sunscald in May...the Dorsets recovered first and produced a lot of peppers...my Bhuts only started producing within the past month and didn't produce that many peppers (maybe 40 total out of 3 plants) but what they did produce were definitely worth the wait....the only other pepper I have grown this year that rivals the Bhuts heat is the 7 Pot...

Great picture! I think I'll set this as my desktop. This thread is interesting because I've been obsessing about the relationships of all the 'different' super-hots. It makes sense that the Bhut and the Naga are really the same pepper but just different strains.
Thanks to the kindness of so many of you generous Hotpepper members I will be growing Bhut Jolokia (from several sources - this will be so interesting!!) Naga Morich, Trinidad Scorpion, Red Savina and Orange Habs, Seven Pot, Mustard Habs, Cveta Hot, Paper Lantern...I have a small garden area maybe 30 to 50 square feet in total. I have no idea how I'm going to fit in everything that I want to grow, maybe 15 types in all. I wish I had a beautiful set-up like AJ's!!
