A real gardening topic

This one is about flowers, not edible produce! I was checking out what toms and other veggies I need to order and for some reason looked at the flower section. I don't particularly like flowers - they attract bees that have stingers they use to poke me. But Linda loves her flower garden and I found a couple of stunning plants I don't think I have around here. One of them is a Kenaf Hibiscus. Said to grow 12-18 feet tall with huge flowers. Also has foliage that resembles pot. Another stunning plant was a Pink Angels Trumpet. If she can grow a couple that look anything like the images I saw it will turn some heads. The third flower is an Indian Giant Cockscomb. It's not a tall plant but do the flowers look beautiful.

Any other suggestions? Her garden is less than 20' from the sidewalk so I would like something that will stand out. Can be annuals or perennials.

I have poppys growing. Nice looking flowers, leave them in the ground through the winter in Pennsylvania and they pop up again next year, can't go wrong with them imho.

Skydiver,

Are they legal? I found a couple that look fantastic:
Double Black Flowered Peony Poppy (Papaver paeoniflorum)
and Peony Poppy White Cloud (Papaver paeoniflorum)

However, a Google search says these are opium poppys. Just what I would need, a flower garden in the front yard where I am growing poppys and what looks like a pot plant!

Mike

The poppies you get from flower books are legal. They arent the opium variety.

wordwiz, I grow coneflowers and various types of other perrenials. The cone flowers are real easy to grow. You might also try some hollyhocks

Brian,

From Wiki:

Papaver somniferum Paeoniflorum Group (sometimes called Papaver paeoniflorum) is a sub-type of opium poppy. Wiki goes on to say that while the plant is "technically" afoul of the law (paraphrasing) growers are not prosecuted but I live in the land of Simon Leis. A sheriff who watched too many cowboy movies as a kid. He not only seeks indictments against ham sandwiches, he prosecutes (or persecutes) them. On top of that, he doesn't like me (comes with publishing a newspaper) and while I'm sure I would win in court, I would rather not have to deal with the hassle. But on the flip side, it might give me something to write about!!!

Mike

Mike, It sounds like y'all need a new sheriff in your parts! We finally voted out the reign of terror that has been in office around here. The deputys around here have been similar to what you describe.

Brian,

There's no way to describe Si. He is the worst of the worst, a jerk of the 24th degree. From what I understand, mirrors are banned in the Sheriff's office because every time he walked by one, it shattered. Commands no respect from individuals but keeps getting elected because 1) he is a Republican and this county is hugely conservative and 2) no one runs against him. A buddy of mine is thinking about it, but it is such an uphill climb that I wouldn't blame him if he doesn't. Plus, if he runs and loses, he's on Si's crap list.

But hey, I was a teenager in the late sixties-middle seventies. I fought to keep our college town dry (because I was a bootlegger). Went to a Bluegrass festival in a park and found some jerk cop ticketed about 20 cars for illegal parking, so I collected the tickets and mailed them to the police with a note saying they were left on cars by mistake.

I'll have to check the exact wording of the law but I suspect the guys in blue will have to prove I am growing poppys for opium production and not flowers. But if they want to give me a hard time, I can always pull a few leaves off the Hibiscus cannabinus plant, roll them up in a paper and smoke them.

Mike

Feed that sheriff a piece of lemon poppyseed cake then get him drug tested an hour later, he'll test hugely positive for opiates.
I've never had a problem with anyone over my poppies, they came from seed I bought at Home Depot. (Or maybe they don't bug me because I'm a Freemason zomg tinfoil hat time)

You have a "newspaper" in Ohio. The Sheriff doesn't like you. You like it hot. You aren't Larry Flynt, are you?

No, he is wheelchair bound and I'm not. But it really is a newspaper, a weekly one that is registered with the Post Office and a weekly circulation of about 2,000. Don't know if this is good or bad, but the Valley Courier is the ONLY weekly community paper (out of 30+) in the Tri-State not owned by Gannet.

I was Googling for Angels Trumpet and much to my surprise, what few places that sell these flowers charge more that $15 per plant. I want to grow two for Linda and two for my mom's garden but I'm thinking about selling some at $12.50 per one-gallon pot. Then the Kenaf Hibiscus - if it leaves look the same when the plant is young as they do when they are larger, I could probably sell a plant in a gallon container for $25 - pot heads wouldn't know the difference. (I doubt the cops do either!)

This boy just wants to have fun! And if I can tug on Si's nose and cause it to get bent out of shape in the process, that's even better.

Mike

Mike, If you will remind me this Spring I can send you a start of the Orange Oriental Poppies I have here. They come from my Grandma who has been growing them for over 50 years!
You will need to remind me in March. They make flowers in April or May depending on the season

Brian,

Can one transplant poppies? I found a couple I would love to add to the garden but the seed sites say they do not transplant well. They are Double White and Double Black Peony Poppies and look extravagant. If you PM or e-mail me: wordwiz@fuse.net, I'll stick the message in my Saved box. I appreciate the offer!

I knew you aren't LF but somehow I had to ask...;) But at least it's the same Sheriff you encounter. I happened to see a special about Larry Flynt in German TV about half an hour after I read your post mentioning Simon Leis and googled SL. And imagine who appeared in that special...

Yes that is how I got my poppies. I dug up some small plants in the early Spring at my Grandma's house. They also spread like crazy after a few years. I can dig up some young plants and over night them to you Express Mail if you dont mind paying the $25 to ship over night. These make large orange flowers in the mid Spring and will spread like wildfire. A truly nice and hardy poppie. Remind me in about late February or March when they first start growing. I am getting old and forgetful so I wont remember lol

If you want poppies I can send you some seeds Flanders field red as many as you want...my daughter gave me enough to supply the world or close.
