African Violet Thread

Do any of y'all grow AVs? If so here is a thread for all of us to share a little info on these cool house plants

To start new plants from your "mother" just cut a leaf and place it in a cup of water with aluminum foil like this until the leaf grows alot of roots.

Here is a plant I started recently from a single leaf. Note the large leaf which is the leaf that used to be in a cup of water w/ foil. I start these new plants and give them to family and friends as gifts.

This is the "mother plant" from where the leaves are from. Its a very beautiful plant that is usually loaded with flowers, normally more than now but it will be making alot of flowers really soon. More buds are forming all the time. It lives in my kitchen which gets a nice Sunrise and a good Southern son in the Winter months

I've never had anything to do with this type of plant but now I know how easy it is to make more I might have to look into them.....

Can you get different coloured flowers???

Got three of them in my window, with different colors on the flowers: One white, one pink and one purple. Only the pink is flowering at the moment.

That should answer you question moyboy :) I'm not sure how many varieties there are, but each plant has only one colour on their flowers.

I have one would get more if I had room for them. I believe there are almost as many varieties of AV at there are of chile.

New plants forming around a leaf I simply stuck into the dirt:

Yeah they make great gifts for the holidays. I really hate shopping so this eliminates me having to do it LOL

I have one in my kitchen as well. Easy to take care of but I didn't know you could just take a cutting and stick it in water like that. I may have to give it a try.

i love african violets! i have three leaves in perlite right now (that works too...) i have a purple one, a red one, and a pink one. the petals kinda sparkle :)
they have registered varieties and all that, all hybrids since they make about a zillion seeds per pod so it would be pretty hard to stabilize a cross so they all get propegated by leaf or sucker. i just have the noid kind from the grocery stores. i'm on an african violet message board as well but i'm basically the youngest person by about forty years...
