Tomato Seeds Planted today 02-17-09

I planted a bunch of tomato seeds this evening...(trays 14-15)

I sure won't keep all these...will only keep probably 60-70 plants

tomorrows planting will be herbs and some veggies...

No Opalka AJ?
I planted some Wite Queen last week and checked on them the other day and it is nearly 3" tall and leggy I started with some lights hoping to get them back in control and straight. Seems nearly every thing is sprouting now --

I'm tying to be discipline and wait till the middle of march for my toms but I'm so anxious, and so ready for spring:(

these were started three weeks later this year than last year and I think will be ready for hardening off/plantout by the end of March (hopefully)

my Bradford Pear tree has a gazillion buds on it and growing every day...thats a good sign spring is almost upon me...here they say when the bradford pears are in full bud and the sandies (white bass or sand bass) are running, it is time to plant the garden...

That's one huge amount of juice/whole tomatoes! In a decent year in Cincy, a plant will produce about a half-bushel of toms (~23 pounds), a real good year, 3/4 bushel.

I was so tempted to sow my toms last Sunday but decided to wait one more week. That will give me 10 weeks to be ready to sell, eleven weeks to the very earliest plant date. (one week less if I count from when they germinate)

Some of the branches that blew off the hickories last night had buds. No, not from the tornado outbreak. That was further north.

I have been wanting to start my tomatoes. But I am going to try to hold off until March 1st. Even then it will be 10 weeks until plant out time. It's hard to wait. Good luck on yours AJ.

I'm thinking about starting some herbs (since Zorro is getting impatient for the fresh catnip I promised him.) So how much better is oregano grown in a garden compared to the dried stuff you can get for $1 a jar? Worth the effort? And are there different varietes?

I just found out today the oregano is sweet marjoram...and I think it taste better fresh...grew some last year....I was looking for Mexican Oregano but the companies I ordered seeds from didn't have any and I didn't bother to buy it separately...a lot of my recipes call for mexican oregano and I just substitute regular...

I'm mainly using it on Italian night. I'll look at the seed packs next time I go shopping and maybe treat myself to a few $$ worth of herbs this year.

cool...I have two sage plants that overwintered in their bed...and it got down to 19F here...they are thriving...I use mostly Cilantro and Basil...but I always grow Parsley, Sage, Rosemary, and Thyme for old time sake...
