Topics I've Started

Continued 2011 Progress

15 June 2011 - 04:07 PM

Decided to start a new thread. Mostly I was tired of 'experiment'.

After wind, rain, horrible temperature fluctuations that defined May, June has made the garden beautiful again.

It's taken a lot more work than I was ready for, but the roots have finally started going deeper into the soil and the plants are growing again. A month ago they were sad and withering away and 2 actually died. 1 other vanished.

I'm finally getting pods in now too!

Very thing Purple Jolokia loaded with flowers

This was labelled a Bhut Jolokia Brown, but the leaves and pod tell another story.

Some Sweet Cayennes coming in as well.

Next post will focus on the deck buckets.

My Container Growing Experiment

26 May 2011 - 05:30 PM

With how random the weather has been and how annoying my dogs have been by getting in my garden, I've shifted towards growing in buckets. It seems to work for so many of you so I might as well give it a shot. I've also realized my garden soil conditioning came out subpar at best so I'll be reworking it anyway.

Anyway, I've started getting buckets almost daily from my store's bakery department that they get icing in. Here's where I am so far:

I found a much better soil available in my area from Corso's. Combining it with the now-junk MiracleGro and Scott's along with some vermiculite and perilite, I have a very nice and pretty soil. It was raining when I took this picture so the soil looks a little dark.

And using coffee grounds from my night shift hotel job and my fiance's job and some epsom salt I made a nice tea. I've heard a lot of mixed opinions on what nute the coffee grounds give. Whatever they are, they'll be helpful.

And after weeks of looking beat up from the awful weather and little to no sun, my original potted plants look so much better.

I really hope this weather clears up soon. I don't wanna spend any more money on these things this season!

Springtime For Planting

26 April 2011 - 12:00 AM

Well it's been an interesting time since I started my experiment with starting way too early versus playing it safe. And I realized that I did really start too early and caused some serious strain of some of these plants.

I also realized a few things with C. Chinese versus everything else. All my annums had a heck of a time dealing with my shoplight setup for extended periods of time whereas the Chinese's had no trouble at all. The only deaths I had were 1 purple naga, 2 lemondrops, and 2 pi260595 plants. Also each jalapeno variety and cayenne variety didn't enjoy themselves very much and had a tendency to start getting leggy.

But that's the fun of experimenting. I like it better than reading.

But anyway, since Saturday was the first bearable day that wasn't too cold, wet, or windy, I took the time to prep and plant the garden. It was truly a relieving experience. Such a destresser (apart from losing one of my important plant-o-grams).

Here's a hasty picture taken when I finished since it started to rain a bit.

The annums can be seen by the lack of lower leaves!

Earlier I picked my solution for the lost plant-o-gram by grabbing one of each variety and tossing it into a pot. My doggy Horus was intrigued by them.

And here's my last batch of plants from the first wave. Left to right they should be Bhut Jolokia (my first seed harvest experiment from last season), Bhut Jolokia Indian Carbon, Scorpion Butch T, and Scorpion Red.

And this is the mischievious little doggy who's been digging up some of my plants. She rolling in the dirt after a cooldown with the hose.

I caught her this morning digging up the Bhut. She also killed my raspberry and blueberry plants. The season should be successful if I can keep her out of my pots and out of the garden. She's been a troublesome one the past 2 seasons.

Ready For Spring.. Peppers Started

18 February 2011 - 06:27 PM

Thank goodness for the feeling that spring should be right around the corner. I can't deal with another foot of snow and these 50+ degree (F) days have been wonderful.

Anyway, this year's peppers should be much more abundant this year thanks to PepperLovers pleasant selection and the few I dehydrated for this year's crop. Both have yeilded at or new 100% germination without presoaking or special songs or chants. Jusr plop in the dirt and leave em be under the couch for a week.

And now, after nearly 2 months, they're looking great. I got impatient and set up my christmas present greenhouse in my computer/dog room.

Anytime the house feels a little cold I just have to stick my head in this and enjoy the heat. I just need a more permanent location for the fan to keep the air moving.

And here's the peppers.

The Purple Jolokias have been growing like weeds. The left one started growing up into the lights before I could get the new pots ready. But, for now he's a little crooked.

My first collection.

Bih Jolokia, Dorset Naga, Bhut Jolokia Indian Carbon, Scorp Butch T, Scorp Yellow, Scorp Red, Early Jalapeno, Giant Jalapeno, Sweet Cayenne, Tabago Seasoning, Indian PC, Chili de Abro, Bombay Morich, Yellow 7, Hab Red, Hab Orange, Red Savina, Bhut Jolokia Brown, PI 260595, Bhut Jolokia, Jamacain, Lemon Drop, Tabasco

And lastly, pretty much all the same as above with some tomatoes included. I hab my 12 yr old nephew do these ones since he's really into gardening now too. All but the PI260595 have germinated and I killed some of the tomatoes (whoops).

2nd Successful Sauce

15 October 2010 - 08:52 PM

Decided to expand on my earler Kiwi sauce recipe.

Kept the Kiwi/Lemon/Lime idea but used a red wine vinegar and tossed in a papaya that I needed to use immediately before it went bad.

Tossed 5 or 6 jamaican hot peppers and 2 bhuts. Sauced it up and cooked it for a little while adding a few spices.

Came out looking wonderful.

Made for an excellent wing sauce despite the wings being rather low quality.
