I'm an avid reader of science fiction novels and enjoy both the hard stuff and space opera. Sci fi movies usually rank toward the guilty pleasure end of my entertainment spectrum as they're often pretty crappy, but life has been hectic for me lately and I've been indulging frequently. I've found there are lots of new titles out there, with several from Netflix. Anybody seen any good ones lately?

Saw this last night, realy enjoyed it, soundtrack was great I found.
Their is a dubbed version.

I tend to go to the oldies since they have substance compared to the new stuff coming out.
Personally I find Farscape the best space opera out their.

Color out of space (2019)

I didn't know what to expect but in the end I really enjoyed it.

@Uncle Eckley Annihilation is worth watching too. If you look for a short serie (only 2 seasons), Altered Carbon is a good one IMO.

I have seen Annihilation. Okay. Felt rushed, obviously adapted from a longer work. I'd watch Natalie Portman trim her toenails in the dark.

The Tomorow War I find a great movie, lots of action, great FX.
Approved for a sequel.

I've read it. Short, but it's got that classical feel. Somewhere between Buck Rogers and Arthur C. Clarke. Does it end the same way as the novel? "So.. why'd you guys start this war, anyway?" "*US??!*" Lol. A bit predictable, maybe, but it was a good ending with the story all about relativistic time dilation. That stuff is always fun. The war angle was cool with the whole, you might meet a grandson you didn't know you had on the battlefield - and he's older than you thing. I really enjoyed Ender's Game/Speaker for the Dead for Card's take on it.

Are you looking for books or shows?

As far as books go, I enjoyed the "The Interdependency" series by John Scalzi (starting with "The Collapsing Empire").

I went back and read the first few books from an earlier seires by Scalzi, "Old Man's War". The first two books of that series were fun. Then it got repetitive.

But I enjoyed the entire Interdependency series.

Stargate SG-1 isn't too bad, especially once it gets its legs. But it stays pretty light and pretty self-aware (a fair number of "meta" episodes or moments)

For TV, if you haven't already, check out The Expanse. I was quite pleased by it. They actually made a real effort: in an early episode, a character on an asteroid station pours a glass of water from higher up and the water stream curls, suggesting the coriolis effect. In one case a character cries and the tears just bead up in her eyes. They may not get everything right but they sure made an effort.

For movies, look up The History of Time Travel on Amazon Prime (might be elsewhere) - super-low-budget but VERY clever.

I've heard good things about The Expanse from others, as well. Knowing nothing about it, I can't help but associate it with season three of ST Enterprise.

I tried History of Time Travel when it released. Couldn't do it, lol.

I watched I Am Mother on Netflix last night. Well executed, but disappointingly unimaginative.

The Midnight Sky on Netflix last night. Large meh. It was small despite its attempt at scope. Many of these Netflix jobs feel like slightly overblown single episodes in a sci-fi variety series. It's like shitposting.

I've always been a sci-fi geek. I think Stargate was the best overall TV universe - SG-1 and Atlantis were both awesome along with their wrap-up direct-to-dvd movies. SGU took everything in a darker, dramatic direction and lost me for the most part.

Babylon 5 was pretty good, assorted Star Treks were good (I enjoyed the "temporal cold war" concept in "Enterprise")

bookwise, I believe the single most fun read ever is Larry Niven's Ringworld series! If you're a sci-fan and haven't read those books, add 'em to your list!

Moviewise, I watch very little of anything anymore, but always liked the dystopian stuff. There's been no shortage of titles over the past 20 years but nothing I really thought was that great recently. Feels like every movie from the past several years is so pumped full of political zeitgeist that the story takes a backseat to the social agenda. I don't know why every movie requires interracial-homosexual sex and "strong female" leads. I just don't see how it matters to the storyline of fighting aliens/robots/shape-shifting-vampires... I can't identify with the new heroes they want to push.

Ringworld series (and Known Space in general) is a BLAST!!!

Have you read the Hyperion Cantos? It's similarly adventurous.
