The proper way to do a SASBE

I usually give folks a choice, either send me a SASBE or send me a few bucks and I'll take care of everything.

I personally dislike it when people send me envelopes with small pieces of bubblewrap. Pain in the butt as I usually have to tape it closed and it ends up not being able to fit through the slot and I have to pay for extra postage. I've also had to pay for SASBE's that were sent to me without enough postage. That's frustrating. Offer up free seeds and I have to pay for the postage to have your SASBE sent to me? Then have to pay even more postage to get it sent back to you. I don't mind people trying to save a few pennies here and there but I'm done covering it.

If I have any seeds at the end of this season that folks want I'm going to ask for a few bucks and take care of everything. Simpler for me. Hope nobody minds.

So if you have some spare seed you want to share and i'm intrested i just paypal you the shipping cost? if that is the case then count me in.

maybe there should be a protocol for seed exchanges outside the US too. I'm particularly interested in getting pepper seeds from Korea beyond the half dozen varieties commercially available in the states, and I can't afford to buy seed by the pound from an importer.

On a quick side note, the post offices small parcel bundel sorter (spbs) was built by the company my dad works for... he had to help test it. It is capable of reading any address on either side, even if it is paralel to the short side of the envelope. Even if one address is on one side, and the other is on the other, with stamps applied using chaos theory.

However your local Post office can turn those features on or off, and can choose not to send it through the machine for any number of reasons.

Also fwiw I found mixed baggies at the local dollar store 50 baggies for a dollar. Walmart is sold out. but the dollar store had scores of them.

Thank you so much for pinning this thread.

I'm a very green newbie to this forum and we wondering about how to properly send an SASBE.

Thanks again.

Also might be helpful to note...don't get offended if someone suggests this topic, or posts the link for you in reply to your PM for seeds, to make sure everything gets done right...the entire point of this thread is to make sure both parties are happy.

Remember, a lot of us don't "know" each other, and have no idea if the other has done this a thousand times, or this is the first time.

This is probably going to upset someone i am sure but what does SASBE or SASE mean? I get the concept but not sure what the acronym stands for.

Just do not refer them to this topic numerous times, once is enough.

We need to treat each other as adults and respectfully.

This might sound stupid, but I want to clarify so I don't eff it up. I put everything inside the sasbe addressed to the person offering the seeds and they will label it with my self addressed label for return? It sounds even more stupid as I type it, but if someone is being generous I want to make sure it's done right

Darth, good to see that you followed some advice! Here it is as simple as it can be put.

1: Self address a bubble mailer. Your name in the middle, and your name on the upper left corner. Fix proper postage to that bubble mailer. I use Scotch 4 IN X 7 IN bubble mailers which cost $1.95 to send. The envelopes cost a buck.

2: Put your labelled baggies or the proper amount of baggies for what you are offered into the self addressed bubble mailer along with any payment (IF rquired) for the seeds/pods/whatever. DO NOT SEAL THAT SELF ADDRESSED BUBBLE MAILER.

3: Place all of that into another envelope, (A bigger bubble mailer?), put the person's address to who is offering you the seeds in the middle of that envelope, and your return address on the upper left corner of that envelope. Affix PROPER POSTAGE. USPS can get this figured out for you exactly so the receiver is not stuck paying fo missing postage.

4: OPTIONAL: Feel free to throw in some extras for the provider, like baggies or stamps to keep the cycle going and support the "free" spreading of pepper happiness.

5: Hang in there. Soon you will be a SASBE guru.

Another option? Ask the provider if you can send the proper amount to cover all the charges.

May the SASBE be with you padawan.

Oh. I'm a noob, so forgive me for not completely understanding. Looking at the photo on page 1, my understanding is that you and person offering the free seeds will reuse the bubble envelope you send. So, you put your address in the upper left, theirs in the middle. Then add a sticky address label with your address on it for the sender to cover their address on the original envelop.

Also, should I assume that when the sender receives the envelope that they must cut it open and then tape it shut for sending back?

Is that not correct?

So, I also see a lot of variables surrounding postage. I definitely don't want to screw the sender out of postage so what is the right amount of postage to send a 4x7 or 4x9 bubble envelope to the person giving the seed, and how much postage should be included for them to send it back?

Sorry if any of these are dumb questions.

four stamps covers pretty much every thing as far as seeds go. you have to have some weight to need more then that. if your ever don't know or are not sure just send the person a message. i bought a box of like 300 small bubble envelopes on line. by mistake so i don't ask for bubble envelopes. the big thing is to make the attempt to cover what ever costs the person is going to end up paying sending the seeds out.

Question:

what happens when you send off a sasbe after an agreed arrangement has been made
and then you find yourself waiting for a response that never arrives after like 2 weeks later?

so basically I sent some one quite a few seeds along with about 2 bucks worth of postage + a bubble envy
for them to returned in and have not yet received word back in 2 weeks..

so I'm guessing perhaps the guy either snickered & enjoyed free sent seeds
or his car exploded after it spun off a road/cliff somewhere (one can only hope)..

either way I suspect I got scRewed!
