How about building a screen using insect screen and place them underneath. The screen can provide filtered sunlight.

How is the soil where they're located? Lighting? It's surprising that it doesn't set much fruit since all the mango tress I've seen are heavy producers.

I wish they were easy to set fruit in the PNW as they are germinating!

What is the exact issues you are having with hardening off the plants?

You can pretty much use any type of soil as long as it has good drainage, aeration, and retains moisture and nutrients to a certain degree. Price is a factor when considering which type of medium to use. It's a personal choice when it comes to soil, nutrients, lighing, time, etc. The end goal...

Buy the best you can afford. Soil is one if not the most important thing you can provide.
