One last, late update.   The season didn't go so well last year - I don't think I had an early enough start for the seeds, didn't use good dirt early on, and didn't do the transition outdoors correctly.   Most of the plants stayed runt-like and didn't grow any fruit after I transferred them...

Just a quick comment, but either for crosses or just to try: the Aji Painapple (Aji Pineapple x Butch T Scorpion) is of note in this thread. Speaking of which, if anyone has or knows of where I could get seeds for that variety, I'd be interested.

Sorry for the double post, but I found some forum topics that should hopefully be good resources for good cold-resistant varieties to cross with. I'm also including small-plant/pepper/pot varieties, as in my mind they usually fit in the heartier category. Not really sure if that's the case, but...

It's cool that you're thinking of doing this - I'm a big fan of this sort of cross. I've been wanting to do this for a similar reason - due to the zone I'm in, and the fact that I grow in pots, most of the peppers I've grown haven't done so well - especially the chinenses I've started from seed...

The first pic looks cayenne-like. The latter one, though, not so sure.

My cayenne pepper plant germinated around the beginning of march, and I only picked the first red pod a couple of days ago.  And this was a much smaller cayenne variety than the one you have. So I don't think you have anything to worry about!

Another member can correct me if I'm wrong here, but if you have one that looks pretty yellow, stick it in a bag (or really just let it sit out with some other ripe peppers around it) and see if it gets more yellow. If so, yellow is the ripe color. If not, it might just be some sort of color...

Update, but without photos:   The Cayennes are massive, as is the Aji pineapple. The orange blob habanero is as well, but it wilts every time I set it in the sun, even after weeks of taking it outside for increased amounts of time. I'm about to put it in a bigger pot, but I'm hoping it can...

Well, pepperdatabase.org is a good place to start, especially if you know some peppers it could be. I've started contributing there recently.

@AzJohn, you could technically just keep concentrating vinegar by distilling off the water (since it boils lower than the acetic acid). It doesn't form an azeotrope as far as I can tell (all I could find was this data to go off of), so there's no limit on how concentrated you'd be able to get...
