Negative. caveat: I have never made beer. haha. But, if you want to make beer as a hobby, go ahead, make it. But, don't launch into it thinking you will save money. (just ask my wife, I launch into many things!) You will still be buying beer plus have the cost of making it. imho.
If you drink Busch it'll cost you. If you drink Sam Adams it'll be break even, and not nearly worth the time, space, or effort. If you love craft beer and don't live in the handful of cities where the best of it's plentiful, you can homebrew to be able to recreate similar beers to those you can't get your hands on - and then you'll be happy.
You will save if you make a beer thats strong. Those saying you will lose forget that busch sucks and it takes a lot to get you hammered. i laugh at people drinking 12 beers od 4.5 percent or slightly higher crap, and I drink a 10% beer and get the job done with 4 to 5 beers.
even beer like natural ice sucks, and I found that better quality beer at the same alcohol percentage does the job better. Quality trumps quantity. Pus you dont get all bellied up drinking so much.
Do the simple math, if I drink a beer at 10% then 3 beers is the same as drinking a sixer of 5%, plus the buzz is superior. That cheap shit has a cheap buzz.
Good points Aaron. Quality over quantity all day. Notice that the so called "cheap" beer is getting kinda of expensive. More reason to just get the good stuff or make your own.
Where I buy my stuff from in FL the cost STARTS at aobut $20 for a 5 gallon batch (think of very basic homebrew, which can be hit or miss) and then goes up pretty significantly depending on the style or quantity of ingredients. I recommend doing it all. Homebrew, drink good beer on occasion, and have some bubbly light shit on hand for everyday use.
