uhhhg. Take a bag of lime with you.

No obvious leaks but there is a smell coming from somewhere.

think it's a venting issue and it's the gases I'm smelling. This will be a pain in the butt.

Is there a cleanout down there? If so, check for a crack in the lid. If drain is PVC, check all the exposed joints. Is your venting in-wall or roof jacks?

Remember that sewer gas isn't always lighter than air. It can float down from the lid.

Air admittance in-wall and a pipe that goes to the roof roof. The guy at the hardware told something dont sound right. My house was built in the 1930's so...

If your jacks get plugged, that gas has to go somewhere, almost always up your nose. Up here in our part of Texas we have roof jacks that freeze now and then, causing....Ewwwww

Also, if you have a sink or toilet trap that has somehow lost it's fill gas will freely come out the drain. run some water in your sinks and flush once, that's the cheapest "try".

do you actually have a "crawl" space though?

alot of houses down here have what i call,Philippino child spaces... because only a tiny pphilippino child can actually crawl down there. literally like 8 inches alot of the time.

It's a little tight but I can army crawl all around. House sits on bois darc stumps siding comes off easy. Looking like this is gonna take some time or money to fix. Old rusty cast iron pipes need to be replaced.

if its accesable it should not be very hard/expensive.

i think the the DWV sanitary 4" pvc is like 2 bucks a foot?

fittings are like 7 bucks...

its mostly the time that will kill you if you end up hiring someone.

oh and you might have to special order the fancy rubber compression fittings that adapt cast iron to pvc.

and maby refresh the insulation while you are down there? =)
