Like hell it was lol. Not getting into the historical meaning behind it but when I see poppy little bastards and hipsters doing it, I draw the line. And no, you don't need to be on stage to "rock out". It's a show of respect to the band on stage to let them know that they're doin it right and you're pumped the fuq up.

And then, you have douche bags like gene simmons that try to trademark it. An OK band thats been an inspiration for a lot of BETTER bands but c'mon, thats a pretty douchey thing to do. I've never liked that guy.
