    Next year's hydro plans...

I know I've just posted about overwintering, but I'm also planning a bigger/better setup for next year. The plan is something like this: It's a garland "titan" tray 100x55x15cm = 65l, sitting atop one (with some woodwork) or two (with some laziness) 35l "really useful" boxes There will...

    overwintering Overwintering hydro?

My first experiment into hydro has been a single c. annuum "sizzler" in a 10l pot with a 400l/h pump running through some garden hose with eight ~3mm holes cut in it. The plant has grown really well here it is about a month ago, it's not grown noticeably since. (I feed it GH Floramato &...

    health Growing the wrong way...

So when I was repotting I was surprised that one seedling just fell out of the soil. Closer inspection showed it was very confused with its seed 'hat' on its feet! I snipped the seed case open and there was a root coiled inside. Carefully planted it back in some soil & after a week, it...

    Importing seeds

I dunno about germination rates & whether the seeds are true yet - they've only been in the soil a week... (we're talking about http://www.exotic-seeds-lapalma.com/ btw)

overwintering So, Are any of you overwintering folks getting hammered yet?

I've read in various places that if food is scarce the larvae eat each other, so more isn't necessarily better? (Also fewer means the cats are less likely to jump onto the plants while "hunting" larvae)

    Importing seeds

As I posted over here I've not had a problem with nickys nursery (I've ordered from them a couple of times). Germination rates have been fine & seeds have grown into the correct plants

overwintering So, Are any of you overwintering folks getting hammered yet?

I had huge problems with aphids starting about a month back... I rather selfishly "unhibernated" some ladybirds (they were in the corners of the kitchen window, it freezes, they would have died)... put all 5 on the worst affected plant... they made about a dozen very hungry babies which are now...

    Importing seeds

I bought some seeds from http://www.thechilliman.biz/ They arrived very promptly to the UK. Dunno about germination rates/trueness yet as they've only been in the soil about 6 days :D You shouldn't have customs problems either... (or do you have interstate shenanigans?) Alistair

    Fungus Gnats

I got fed up with the cats jumping after them (cats do hurt chili plants when they land on them!) and bought some nematodes which cleared up the fungus gnats for about 18 months. Alistair

harvesting A little harvest and starting off next years seedlings

Thanks everyone, and good spot with the lights being screwed in place Chris :) I'm not sure I will do any moving closer to the lights though. The thermometer in the cupboard reads 26-30C which I'm happy with, so heat is not an issue. And I'm not convinced by the 'light falls off as a square...

How much do you spend on your gardening?

hmmm... I try not to think about it & this year i'm trying to keep costs lower (ha ha) Over 2 years, I've spent: 50 on leds, psu etc + 40 on soldering iron & other tools. 10 on other lights & fittings about 80 on seeds & 20 on posting seeds 100 on pots, trays, soil (I make my own paper pots...

harvesting A little harvest and starting off next years seedlings

The last of the summer's pods: Serranos, Scotch bonnets, a rocoto, 'sizzler', aji rojo, aci sivri, cuban seasoning Some of my plants have begun flowering now that I've moved them inside, and the 'holy mole' has 6 new pods growing. And as of this morning, this cupboard has 4x trinidad...

    greenhouse Started on my Greenhouse

Lol, 1300 cubic feet... let me think... A pint of warm water & a tablespoon of sugar & a tablespoon of yeast makes one inch of froth in about 10 mins... (this is how I make bread) 1 * pi * (3.25/2 *3.25/2) = 8.3 cubic inches = 0.0048 cubic feet I therefore conclude that you need ~ 30,000...

    greenhouse Started on my Greenhouse

Once you have a yeast mixture going, I don't think you need to buy more yeast either, just keep pouring most away (it's alcoholic, but prolly best not to drink it ;)), adding new water & more sugar (or flour?). Great greenhouse by the way. Is it cheap to seal up the gaps with tap on both...

    harvesting London Harvest

 think if you're interested you should find out for yourself ;) They've been a bit disappointing to be honest, (maybe that's what you get when they have a stupid name!) They're generally a bit bitter, none has had a nice flavor one in three is quite hot. I've pickled the ones from...
