[Mar 20] What are you working on this week?

Got scolded by an old-time canna grower that my soil mix for peppers was all wrong. I'm apparently not organic enough. So I use some time release 8-8-8 in my mix, worked great for years. He said I could get better yields by going 100% organic and gave me a shopping list. FFOF to use as soil base...

    Growing Habaneros Red/Chocolate/white/orange need Help

We could go back and forth on this subject all day long and still not agree 100%. It's simply a difference of opinion with no animosity either way. Your last sentence I believe is completely true, especially when talking about all that crap targeted to cannabis growers. (Beastie Bloomz @...

    Growing Habaneros Red/Chocolate/white/orange need Help

I've been growing red/chocolate/orange habs for a couple years now. They are pretty sturdy plants compared to other chinense and quite forgiving if you forget to water or fertilize them. A simple balanced fertilizer if you can get it works fine. An N-P-K ratio of 8-8-8 will keep them happy. A...

Heading to Trinidad, anything to score?

Yup, we got rats who jumped ships back in the 1800's and some brainiac decided to import mongoose not long after to control the rats. Of course rats are nocturnal animals and mongoose sleep all night so we got double screwed on that one. The mongoose then proceeded to wipe out quite a few...

smoking Poll. Propane vs. Charcoal what say you and why.

Don't mean to hijack this thread but that made me think of back when it was a common thing to open a small hole in the hotdog or sausage wrapper and fill it full of beer. Then just toss it on the grill like that (usually wood or charcoal fire). The plastic wouldn't burn unless all the beer...

The does and donts of sauce making

+1 Exactly this when I try to make sauce. Cook it down for awhile, run through food mill, cook again before bottling. Most seeds and skin bits are gone.   Not sure if you could say it is sauce but my uncooked batches, either pre- or post- ferments are not milled or filtered in any way so has...

[Feb 27] What are you working on this week? Group activity log

Anytime I start seeds I have to get a fresh bag of FFOF because of the mites, gnats, and other critters that love moving into a partial bag of the stuff. It's worth it though because my naga brains and fataali's are shooting out of the soil. Choc hab and savina seeds are a little older but...

smoking Poll. Propane vs. Charcoal what say you and why.

This is a good topic. I voted charcoal but it's much more complicated than that. My overall preference is seasoned mesquite or other local hardwoods but it's getting harder to come by in large amounts, charcoal is next best thing.   I usually get a new propane rig every 3-4 years. The burners...

    Pinching Flowers

Many people do, the theory is to let growth go to the plant instead of the flower/fruit to get a stronger more productive plant.   I don't. No theory. I can afford to be less attentive because of where I'm at, except for a couple dormant periods each year I have growth year round.  ...

water Could this be something other than over watering?

Farm & Garden stores have what is called "Water Soluble Sulphur" Best thing I ever found for mites. It worked so good I mixed a batch on my hose end mixer, set it at 4oz per gallon and drowned my entire back yard. Mites stayed away for over a year. I think it's time for me to do it again.

    Plant dying one by one.

+1 on this. I've always had to deal with aphids on one level or another but they were never the cause of the stems dying back like that. I suspect rootbound and/or bad soiI from poor drainage/nematodes/bugs in general in the soil. Instead of trying to find the exact cause you can eliminate...
