As long as the soil is aerated well enough and the amendments of those meals and manure are composted enough then you should be good. Most of us who mix our own soils and add alfalfa, and other amendments mix the soil up and moisten it to about the consistency of a damp sponge and then let it...
I have some things in the ground but all of my crops are in containers.
I do turn the ground occasionally with a fork and work in some compost but my yard is a work in progress as I don't have near enough compost to amend all the flower beds. I am going to go buy another 1/2 yd of Diestel turkey...
Well said my friend. :)
Once you have a good viable soil it's easy. Top dress a couple of times a season if you like with ewc and some chopped Comfrey if you have it or maybe some kelp and water it. That's it. No pH to figure out or anything. I like that personally.
Synthetic fertilizers do damage soil microbes because of the salts in them. To what extent I am not certain.
This is a little lengthy but it discusses what I am talking about.
"What about NPK in Natural Growing?
Ill try to write something up which illustrates the difference between nutrient...
I guess I stated that wrong. My point was in regards to Roguejim saying he did not believe that 2" of compost would provide plants all they need for an entire season when indeed it will.
Yes N-P-K is the same in organic and synthetic in terms of what the plant can use but it's much more complex...
It is in full bloom now and looks even more impressive.
Yes they are very deadly but many plants that are poisonous taste so bad that most kids wouldn't eat them.
I have no kids around and the dog doesn't mess with them. There are many deadly plants in the yard but I have never had a...
People have been doing it for a long time. My dad used to grow tomatoes that way every year.
The problem is that we have been brainwashed to believe it's all about N-P-K which is not true.
Here's one example I like to show people. What does this tree in the photo receive for nutrients besides...
Jim, you live in one of the absolute best states in the country for nurseries and growers in general. I would think you could find someone to get a yard or two of finished compost. How far is Peaceful Valley garden supplies from you?
They are in Grass Valley, CA I believe.
I use an old coffee grinder as it turns them into a fine powder. Just don't inhale the small cloud of dust that comes off the shells when you open the grinder. It's bad and sends me into a coughing fit. lol
A blender would work as well but I am not sure how fine they would be.
I put everything together in the compost bin but 90% of it is yard clippings and some leaves depending on the time of the year. I have a static worm bin that is all compost with a few amendments added so no food scraps go into it.
It's the abbreviation for Bacillus thuringiensis which is a bacterium. This particular one only kills caterpillars and is considered organic since it is not toxic or anything.
There are a few different ones but I use the one for caterpillars made by Safer brand.

Pretty much ales in general with IPA's being among my favorites.
I don't homebrew because I don't have the time or energy when I get home from work.
It is my understanding from those in the Cannabis growing culture that this is probably THE best earthworm castings you can buy.
Those will do nothing but good things my friend.
That's awesome! The Budworms here are not that easy. Without weekly applications of BT they will decimate 30-40% or more of the harvest in my experience.
I use BT every week on certain special plants that Budworms love to destroy during flowering.
I can't complain though as compared to some of you growers I have it easy as far as pests are concerned.
I have no whiteflys, aphids, fungus gnats, etc. I am lucky.
Absolutely right.
I agree. Is this sitting on a flat surface where anaerobic bacteria could thrive?
Elevate it so it gets air to the bottom and the aerobic bacteria will take over.
