STC3248, Just Another Grow Log! Holiday Harvest!

Sorry to hear about the issues, but hopefully that's the end of it... my Fatalii was dealing with something similar last year, it never produced much so it's probably for the best to get rid of the problem plants. Your video reminded me of the oldspice commercials... "look over there, now back...

    synclinorium's 2012 Grow Log

A couple more shots of the Scorpion cross. This plant is growing on me- I almost didn't overwinter it last year assuming I'd just been plain ripped off, but the seller allayed the worst of my fears (course, you can only trust an ebay seller about as far as you can throw them). Hoping that some...

    Butch T?

At least all of my seed from Reimers last year grew true... just saying... terrible germ rates aside. To their credit at least the image Hirts has been using is similar to the plant you received... still not a Butch T though.

The jungle is well under way, it seems. That Flex is looking good. Definitely want to give it a shot in the future...

    What plant defeats you?

Haha, I'm tenacious about the Rocoto. I overwintered all of my plants in spite of only getting a handful of pods last year, and this year most of them are already 3-4 feet tall and again only a handful of pods. Here I have the hot weather to blame, but meh. They'll grow like weeds but getting...

    What plant defeats you?

Wow, I'm envious. I have never gotten heads anything close to that size. Mint is a crapshoot from seed- you're better off finding someone with cuttings, which shouldn't be an issue. And it does take over very quickly. I have chocolate mint and peppermint in a planter, and then spearmint in the...

    What plant defeats you?

Broccoli is one I've never successfully cultivated, even when I lived in New York. I've done other brassicas successfully, broccoli just hates me. Spinach has also given me all sorts of trouble.

    Branch fell off

Happens all the time. Once my plants get above a certain size, I just loosely tie them to a support to prevent the most severe of breakages. Earlier in the season I had a Datil branch get aborted for no immediately discernible reason. Animals, wind, pests, you name it, can all contribute to loss...

    synclinorium's 2012 Grow Log

Just the one I took earlier: The Datil is on the left. It's from last year's saved seed, so I'm assuming it's either crossed with the White Hab or Tepin. I'll wait and see what the other pods look like, but so far nothing else has set.

    synclinorium's 2012 Grow Log

Few more pics of the Trinidad Scorpion cross because it amuses me. Pods were nowhere near as gnarly last season, pretty much confirming the mother. Ebay seller, partially redeemed. Shot of the cross in the foreground with the Butch T in the back. Now THAT's a Brain Strain (Yellow)!

Mama Chile Tepin is Busting Out

Niiiice. I can only hope mine is that big someday. I too have an accidental Tepin x Jalapeno, pods seem a bit squatter than yours though.

    synclinorium's 2012 Grow Log

Quick update; weather has cooled off considerably so I don't think the plants will do much for a couple days... still, I'm hoping a few more Rocoto pods will set given the opportunity. Our continental climate is very unforgiving for Rocotos, unfortunately, and I keep them around mainly as a...

flavor Taste testing yellow Brain Strains

Wow, those are monsters PepperJam. Mine are so tiny in comparison. I'm afraid to try one on its own, but I have noticed a tendency for them to blush orange to some degree the longer I leave the pods on the plant. I have three plants going, the other two haven't started podding yet.

    synclinorium's 2012 Grow Log

Made my first batch of sauce for the year, 28 Datils put to good use. Should at least have Datil seed to go around now... non-isolated of course. I think half the fun of trading seeds is the occasional surprise, so I don't usually bother to isolate (unless I'm breeding out crosses), and I don't...

    synclinorium's 2012 Grow Log

It occurs to me I grow way too many yellow and orange podded plants. The Chocolate Bhuts are still small so it'll be a while before they do anything... Brain Strain Yellow again. The later pods are looking a bit nastier than the early ones. I can't get a good picture, but they have the sort...

annuum what would you get (jalapeno x serrano) cross

That's been my experience this year. The four (accidental) F1s I have going are all underwhelming compared to the parents. We'll see what the F2s look like next year, but I don't have space for the dozens of plants required for a full range of expression.

heat I've read a lot of debates about the hottest, how about the tastiest?

I'm pretty much the same way. I'm not a huge fan of the chinense flavor on its own, it induces a gag reflex every time I've tried one. I like their aroma and what they bring to a dish, but on their own, no thanks. I wouldn't call them fruity, the aroma and flavor often remind me of citrus, but...

    synclinorium's 2012 Grow Log

I never worried about it. I'm sure it's not good for them to be sitting in water after it rains, but in the summertime the pans dry up so quickly that I don't think it matters. In the spring and the fall it might be worth taking the pans off.

STC3248, Just Another Grow Log! Holiday Harvest!

I love that weather vane trellis with the tomatoes. I think I'll need to give the Purple Bhuts a shot eventually, they're nice looking plants. I'll be wishing for SoCal weather soon enough, we're expected to hit 100 in the next couple days... peppers are about the only thing that tolerate our...

    synclinorium's 2012 Grow Log

The pods on the tepin cross are a little bigger than the mother, but not by much. Here's a pic of the three, tepin on the left (who needs to get in the ground or in a pot soon, though I'm out of buckets), White hab in the middle, Datil cross on the right. The Datil cross is substantial but very...
