soil Mold on surface of soil questions

Exactly what I do, good advice. Just don't get any H2O2 on the plants.

Quick, cheap way to go from 400ppm to <200ppm

Filters only remove suspended solids, not dissolved solids. So a filter will not change ppm. A small R/O system (>$100) will give you <20 ppm water and is the best way to go.

    Pro-Mix BX now without Mycorrhizae

I agree totally. The little happy fungi take a while to colonize things and do reduce particle size throughout the mix. What I've noticed is that people will buy Myco-innoculated grow media and then proceed to bombard it with petrochem fertilizer (not that I'm opposed to 'em for some...

I just had a great Fatalii experience - made drunken noodles two nights ago (old school way) and used several fataliis. It really made the dish, much more so than using thai peppers which I'm not growing now. One of my favorite eating hot peppers for sure. Congrats on your first pods of the season!!

Completely random thread about slugs; quick way that helps to control 'em

I hate slugs. Suspect that most gardeners do. Every night at sundown I walk the rows of peppers (went completely overboard this year), tomatoes and other veggies, looking for the slimy bastards. It pretty easy to see them since I use raised beds and an outdoor hybrid hydroponics system I...

Need some serious help, what have I done?

There is a little aphid damage but I would be more concerned with the fertilization. Also, the chewed up leaves look like slug damage or something (aphid tend not to take big chunks like that). If it were me, I carefully pull the plants out of the pots, gently wash their roots by submersing...

    Need a little help here....

It's a long shot but it looks kind of like a Shishito pepper about two weeks away from harvest. The Shishitso is the long-lost Japanese cousin of the Padron - mostly mild and tasty but every 20 or so you get a real hot one. Totally delicious pepper. Then again, it might not be a Shishitso -...

    WTF!

OK, that is officially the dumbest thing I've ever see anyone do. I mean, why would anyone do that???

heat I've read a lot of debates about the hottest, how about the tastiest?

ChocoHab Fatali Savina For non-spicy I adore the Padron.

sun Plant wasn't hardened well/got some pretty bad sunburn

Yup, I've had the same issue a little bit this year. I try to always put them out before a day or two of overcast weather and/or some light rain. The weather channel screwed me on this last batch that went out and I saw a bit of leaf "whiting". Nonetheless, it was only a couple lower leaves and...

How do I embed a video on my post?

Tried every way I could think of (even BBCode) on my last post but couldn't get it to work. Any tips on how I get a video I put on youtube to show up here? Thanks!!

    Nutrient War!

I actually developed my own nutrients off LeChatelier's formula ("law of minimums"). I've used them in all sorts of hydro (DWC, NFT, drip, aero, etc.) as well as ground gardening. They aren't technically organic but I use stuff like mined chilean nitrate. They clock out at 7-13-28 and 19-12-14...

    food Hot Freakin Icecream

Wow. Capsaicin is soluble in fats & oils. That must be insanely hot and keep burning long after the fact over ice cream. I got some blueberry hot sauce in my cabinet. Next time I have ice cream I'm tempted to try it........

Beatin the dead horse... pot size!

I checked and unfortunately I do not - I was trying it at work a few years ago and no longer work there. It sure as heck didn't stand up by itself. Behind it about 30" was a wooden fence, so I rigged up some monofilament fishing line and tied loops in the end (a la bass rig loop) then supported...

Beatin the dead horse... pot size!

In general, bigger is better, but you can bend this rule by feeding with every watering (think hydroponics). If the roots don't get what they're looking for where they sit, they grow outwards looking for more water and/or nutrients. So if you are feeding heavily with each watering, you can get...

video Time lapse video - putting out some peppers in outdoor quasi-hydroponics setup

Finally got out a whole mess of my pepper seedling. About 250-300 are going to go out this year. Today were some ChocoHabs, Bhut Jolokias, Bih Jolokias, Red Savinas, Serranos, Three types of Scorpions, 7-Pots and a couple other random varieties. This technique works pretty darn well and I...

indoor Keeping plants short and bushy for a small indoor grow

Pinching it at the top is good advice. Other things that come into play are: - lots of light. That way they don't have to "reach" for it. - temperatures that aren't too hot. Try to keep things at 85F maximum - In hydroponics, keep the nutrient solution cool. Optimum is around 67F believe it or...
