The thing is, I don't see any evidence of any critters...  the only mammals here are rats, cats, mice, possums, skunks, raccoons.     It may be the horn worm, but wouldn't they be hanging around the plant they are eating?     We do have these blue birds that hang out my garden daily, but I doubt...

I suspect slugs, maybe not?     one day later   OK, I found the culprit around midnight...  Picked him off and squished him.  just like a grape...  left his carcass out for the birds.   anyone know what it is?  It looks like a hornworm, but it's brown...  sorry for bad pic.

What is this other beetle u speak of? I have these lady bug beetles that are red, but no spots... Are these just lady bugs with no spots? Or the lady bug mimic?

  Yeah, your right...  aphids don't move much.  you have some pretty clear still pics.  I did a google image search and found that the stink bug nymphs compmodder said looks most likely
