Planted my seedlings in the ground today. I started in March with 140 jiffy pellets/pucks. Germinatatin rate was about 80%. After weeding out the weak plants and slwo growers my net seedling count was 84 viable plants. I planted 54 plants in my garden and will give away the remaining 30...
Yes, 36W bulbs. They are T8. Some will recomend CFL but I Looked at them and for the price per lumen it is hard to beat the 48" tube.
I would make your box bigger.
I use a 3 shop-light fixtures with two 48" tubes in each for total of 6 bulbs. Used 6500K lights. Hung lights from ceiling in basement. Set seedlings/plants on folding table. Draped mylar emergency blankets on sides for reflectivity. I germinated and grew 75 seedlings with this basic set...

Bhute ghost - Brown
Transplanted my seedlings into cups and put them outside on the porch. posted pics today. They should be hardened off okay and I'm going to plant in my garden this weekend regardless of the weather forecast. This is year 2 for me and things are going much better. Seedlings are stronger and...
Here's a pict of my peppers so far for 2011. Rain and cold have forced me to keep them on the covered porch. All seem to be doing well. I've got two that I'll discard because their growth is REALLY slow.
In the last week since this picture was taken I think they've grown at least 2 more...
I must be calculating my power usage incorrectly. I run 6 t8 bulbs at 32w each.
At $.06 per kwhour I'm calculating about $.20 per day to run all six lights for 18 hours per day. If I grow seedlings under lights for 60 days it's only about 12 bucks. Electricity seems really cheep to me...
It dies stink here in SW Ohio too. But what do may showers bring.
That said this is my second year with a garden and with peppers. My seedlings look 100% better this year than last year. I've got about 70 plants that are all strong and healthy. Some are still under lights in the...
I feel your pain. We've had over 12 inches of rain in the past 30 days in Cincinnati. Everything in my yard is a mess. Mowed the grass today: Got stuck in mud once and had to use my quad to pull out the neighbor in his commercial mower from the mud My grass was 12 inches in some places...
I've noticed my seedlings are growing well under my fluorescent lights. Many of my plants have 6-8 real leaves. I'm starting to notice the plants are growing wide rather than tall. Is this bad?
I keep the lights about 1 -2 inches above the plant tops. I assume raising the lights will...
I've noticed that many pepper growers grow a large number of plants in pots and buckets rather than in the ground. What advantages are there to growing in pots/buckets?
Updated photos. Fatali and Hot Cherry are growing the best. Bhute growing the slowest.
Started with 144 jiffy pellets and transplanted 104 viable pepper plants.
Growth has really taken off since I transplanted into the cups.
First two photos from last week and last two taken about 5...
Last year I used 2 T8 6500K "day light" tubes. Not enough light. This year I use 6 T8 tubes. 2 "day light" , 2 "cool white" and two "kitchen and bath". Seedlings seem to like the white/blue light the best. I switched out the two kitchen and bath for two more 6500K today. I think in a...
planted some more pepper seeds last weekend. Most have already germinated. Some from batch one that I planted on 3/6 needed more time to germinate so I figured I would move them in with the new plantings and it seems to be paying off as almost all have germinated.
Some of the peppers...
I purchased a heater as part of a Jiffy starter kit. Lowes or HD. The mat is the same size as the 72 plant starter kit. I've found it doesn't heat the corners very well. I set mine on top of aluminum foil and a towel. Seems to work pretty good. I think the kit was about $35USD.
