BT (bacillus thuringensis) works on caterpillars and only caterpillars.

    Pods rotting on the plant?

That is not BER. BER shows itself as dark lesions on the blossom end, the opposite from the stem, and as it progresses will form a sunken and rotten area. While the lack Calcium does contribute to BER, it is often caused by uneven moisture levels that prohibit the uptake of the calcium by the...

tomatos stem issue, need help please

Looks more physical and it has healed over. There doesn't appear to be any concentric rings or yellowing which is typical with bacterial infections. Have you noticed thrips, aphids or other bugs around?

    What is this disease?

I've not known there to be any issues with links on this forum, unless it's to an NSFW or similar website. The owners and mods are fairly liberal in what they allow. From what I've observed over the last few years is that most members act mature most of the time.

    What is this disease?

The ability for a user, either new or old, to present a question on this public and free forum, is of vital importance. Forums that promote an atmosphere of "search before you ask" are great for those that have experience and knowledge. However, they do not provide a welcoming and comforting...

    What is this disease?

Edema happens when the plant uptakes water faster than it gets rid of it through transpiration. If your growroom has high humidity, it is likely the cause. Also, if your grow room is on the cool side, it can also cause that. Now, the leaves that have edema now will not heal and be new again...

    Help with ID of critters!

A garden center should have something that you could use. The times I've been to Japan were not spent looking for aphid controls. I'm certain you could find something on the local market instead of trying to ship internationally, especially liquid.

    Help with ID of critters!

Applying Neem oil and insecticidal soap is likely to be your safest and best method to control and supress the aphids. It will likely take several applications to eliminate the ones you see now and the next generations to come that are already in the works.

    help with neem oil question

A single gnat should not be a reason to deploy the insecticides. Especially since you didn't see where it went nor exactly what it was. The first rule in insecticide or pesticides use in general is to properly identify the target.

seeds how soon should I separate seedlings

A few years ago NCTomatoman, from Tomatoville.com, m, fibally posted a series of videos about his dense planting technique. I've used it for bith tomatoes and peppers without problems. Here's a link. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nLbeZEcz3sw&feature=youtube_gdata_player So long as you don't...

seeds Should you soak the seeds?

Two years ago I did an experiment in a propagation class I had three experiments of 38 seed each. One group was planted without soaking the seed, another was soaked for 45 minutes and the last was soaked 24 hours. The 24 hour soak was the first to germinate but only by a day. In the end, the...

    Black peppercorn starts. Piper Nigrum

Thanks Tom. I found the same info on DG. As well as other sites but before I spend up to $45 on a plant that I haven't seen, I need a warm fuzzy. One of the sites has a picture of the plants for sale that definitely has health issues. Most sites seen to have just a few plants in the inventory...

pests What bug is this? Friendly or enemy?

I want to say that it is a stinkbug of some kind, likely in its third or fourth instar stage of development. So far, I haven't been able to figure out which one.

    Black peppercorn starts. Piper Nigrum

Is there any among us that has grown this as a start from a nursery that was ordered online? Or perhaps there is someone here that deals with rooted cuttings. I am aware that Reimer and a few other places sell the seed but am looking for a rooted cutting from a reputable grower. Thanks.

    soil Amending Clay Soil

The reason that bark "robs" nitrogen is because that when bark decomposes, it reqires nitrogen to do so. If you want to use bark, you will need to increase the amount of nitrogen in your fertilizer. Nitrogen in the form of Ammonium (NH4) or Nitrate (NH3) is what you are ultimately looking for...

    water Rain Water

Most nutrients, both macro and micro-nutrients, are available when the pH is in the range of 6.0-7.0. At 8.4, calcium, magnesium and a majority of minor nutrients are unavailable for the plant to uptake. If you are using a peat based media, which tends to be acidic, to start your seeds in, it...

    water Rain Water

Should be just fine. Depending on your location in the world, the rain may be slightly to moderately acidic which could be an issue. But unless you are germinating strictly in the rain water without something to buffer the pH, you should be good to go.

seeds Going out of town. How so I save seedlings?

You could make a capillary mat. Take a sheet of plastic, or a large trash bag, and lay it flat. Get some felt from a fabric store. Roll up the edges of the plastic to create a dam, set the felt down and put your seedling trays on the felt. Fill with enough water to just cover the felt. It...
