heat I've read a lot of debates about the hottest, how about the tastiest?

Too subjective. You cannot make a scale for taste!

    Two heirlooms new to me

Wow from 2008 and there still is little info online when searching for African Surprise. I have the seeds and have some plants to sell but little in the way of description other than one photo that shows a multicolor small pointed up chile, which are my least favorite in some ways since they are...

    Pruning suckers on tomatos?

I agree that yellow pear tomato is yuck! Also cracks like crazy. Try to find Sweet Beverley instead. As for pruning, I have done both. When I did the Florida weave like in the above pretty pic, I pruned much more. Last year I had all the nice big cages my heart could desire so I did not prune...

    Cover crops of alfalfa

I tried black eyes this year for a cover crop but it was too early. Good to know the store ones do grow if it hadn't been so cold.

    Cover crops of alfalfa

Regular alfalfas would definitely survive. I can't get rid of the Big N alfalfa. Which is a good alfalfa for fast growing but it was bred in MN so it lasts in winter and gets really deep roots. The non dormant alfalfa is much better. You could plant right in it without tilling.

    Starting to hate cats....

Cats love pepper and tomato leaves. coffee grounds and banana peels will repel the cats. I try to keep my plants they want up higher and wrap shower curtains around the shelves to keep them out.

    Cover crops of alfalfa

You could grow one summer cover crop such as buckwheat now and then in later summer put in non dormant alfalfa which is not winter hardy. In spring you can plant right into it. Territorial seeds has it. You don't want to over do the N plus it is ephemeral and can't be stored. Buckwheat would add...

    Epsom Salts !

I agree about cal and mag together. When you take them as a supplement you should take them together or your digestion gets screwed up. It is the same in soil, if you add too much mag the cal will suffer. I used to use cal/mag tablets in the garden but had no idea on the recommended dose for a...

    Potato question

I got pics too. I planted 80# Thursday and Friday and have just about 5# more room left to buy and plant. I do triple rows and so I rake off a few inches of soil on the beds so it can be hoed back on later to hill up. Before planting after planting after drip lines but before any straw is...

What age/size is it normal/ok for plants to start producing flowers?

I let one Hungarian Wax go to flower real early in the house last year and then saved the seed from the first pod. That way it was pure without work. Yes it definitely didn't produce well after that. (always have too many anyway)

    Epsom Salts !

Again, if you soil has adequate or high magnesium adding epsom salts is unnecessary and can throw the balance of calcium off. A soil test will show your levels. My quite sandy soil with a few years of organic matter added has super high P, high K, high Cal and high mag. It doesn't mean the soil...

    Epsom salt

Well if your soil already has plenty of magnesium, using epsom salt will throw off the balance and calcium can get tied up. I guess I am a soil test nerd.

    Minnie's pics and chat

Thanks! I will transplant them all to paper cups soon and into the greenhouse. Then the ones to bring to market will go into square pots for sale. The superhots I will grow will be in pots on cement in the hot sun. The rest of what I plant will be in the garden on black plastic with row cover...

    Potato question

Sure I got tips. I am growing 100# of seed this season. Heck that will be the end of my back to harvest that many! In the ground is best because fancy methods require too much water. they need even and plentiful water. I prefer to plant them in double or triple rows, about 1 foot apart between...

    Minnie's pics and chat

I took some photos tonight. I have about 400 peppers and a 1/2 tray of superhots. I am growing about 200 myself for my CSA business and market and the rest will be sold or given away. I like to keep some extras because I usually lose like a dozen to cutworms or whatever. I will be...

soil Soil question that just occurred to me?

Mostly dump out in the garden but sometimes it can be reused to pot something unrelated and unfussy. Pro Mix is pretty sterile and also not water retentive. I would put in some compost and some moisture control potting soil. Boy I have seen plenty of your avatar in real life as a meter reader...

Bummed- too few super hots again this year

Someone just ordered 10 bhuts and maybe I can get him to buy the 2 remaining Barracks too. I also just brought my wintered over bhut home from my mom's. I sprayed it good with Safer spray since it had a few ahpids. Then I put it in the greenhouse and the lady bugs found it. I brought it in the...

    Potato question

Why don't we call them freckles? They are normal. I threw some potatoes in a compost pile 3 years ago and didn't even water them and in late summer had baby butt spuds! I mean they were so smooth.
