    annuum Challeano.. Really an Annuum?

I love SSE, but yes, I have noticed that on their seed packets they sometimes have the wrong species name. I think it might be an editing issue that someone doesn't catch when proofing the seed packet design. [Edit] I took a look at their catalog, they clearly have the species wrong still. It...

chinense Bhut Jolokia, aka Ghost Pepper, the New Mainstream Super Hot Pepper

I think it's fantastic, better a stable landrace with history, than an unstable or renamed variety of mixed (or questionable) caribbean genetics promoted as an American or European pepper.

chinense Sri Lanka White Bhut Jolokia. Heard of them?

The languages in Sri Lanka (besides English) are Sinhala and Tamil, so I don't think if they had a white C. chinense that it would have the name "Bhut Jolokia", as that was a regional name in parts of Northeast India....which speak many other languages, none of which are Tamil or Sinhala.

SKULLBIKERS Fun with peppers in 2021 GLOG

"Asian Beetles" are actually a species of ladybug, the official common name is Asian Multicolored Ladybird Beetle (Harmonia axyridis). They feed on soft bodied plant pests just like native ladybugs, however they become much more numerous, and have much better defense mechanisms....oh and they...

    Grow Log 2021

Shared with me as “Devil Pepper” from Oaxaca, Mexico. Extremely similar and possibly the same as “Goatsweed” and “Black Cobra”. To me they seem to have thicker flesh than I remember the other two having. Nice herbal pungent flavor unripe, and very high heat for an annuum.

    baccatum Earliest baccatums?

I like Aji Cristal and Omnicolor because they taste awesome unripe, but they ripen pretty quick too...in case you like them better red ripe.

SKULLBIKERS Fun with peppers in 2021 GLOG

Ah yes, a queen Southern Yellowjacket (Vespula squamosa). Great insects to have patrolling our gardens...it's too bad they are so defensive of their nests otherwise they would be celebrated for how beneficial they are. Also, they are quite a nuisance when they scavenge for protein (for the...

    Grow Log 2021

Thanks! Yes, and I forgot to mention that the "April Fools Day" is only 6" tall in a 4" pot....certainly doesn't take up a lot of space! The peppers aren't too bad considering it is an "ornamental".

    Grow Log 2021

I would say about the same level as fatalii. Flavor is a mix of Bhut Jolokia and Caribbean Red, more heavy on the CR flavor and aroma.

Thanks Paul! These are growing in my grow tent. They were started in November through December of 2020. I have a balcony with a sunny corner where I grow a few in the summer too.

    seeds Seed viability over time

I found a stash of rocoto seeds my Peruvian friend brought me back from Peru back in 2014...stuck a bunch in some growing medium on the 27th of February, now crossing fingers.

Good hot pepper for growing indoors

Any of the clustering types such as Thai Red, are super easy, compact, rather productive, and versatile (can be used green, red, dried, and as powder). they also have decent but not overwhelming heat.

    Siv's third time's a charm

Even though the local Indian Grocery store has a good selection of fresh green and dry red chillies, there is just something so satisfying about growing your own! My wife won't eat anything hotter than a few Wiri wiri peppers, so even though growing superhots is fun, I also have to remain...

    pests Advice on aphid prevention?

I diligently inspect the undersides of all leaves and growing tips/flower buds daily after bringing plants indoors (after an initial inspection before bringing them in). I physically destroy any I find with my fingers, being careful not to damage the tender growth. I hold one hand below the area...
