B.C. homeowner fined $5,200 for growing cucumbers

Sure, five grand is a lot, but you haven't had a cucumber until you've had one from your own garden.

breeding Cross polination and Growing in Containers

I'm yet to encounter a pepper that won't grow well in a container. Last year, I grew 23 types, with many of them in both containers and in the ground. The only ones I grew that did noticeably better in the ground were Aji's (aji limon and costeno amarillo). I think it's due to their large size...

Jalapeno Varieties - Best Option for 2010 Grow?

I grew Mucho Nachos in '09. Wasn't very impressed. Decent size and heft, but mild heat and quite bland flesh. Kind of like a "gringo pepper" as they serve in Mexican restaurants in the Northeast, where they know the local palette can't handle the heat. My muchos were growing next to my Biker...

    seeds seed starting book

Notice on pg. 32 - 34 she provides 2 useful charts: # of days to emerge for different vegetables at different temperatures, and germination % by temperature. Many of the questions about why seeds haven't popped yet can be answered right on these charts, I think.

Jalapeno Varieties - Best Option for 2010 Grow?

Interesting....I'm planning on doing the F2 Biker Billy test this year. I have the same suspicion that they'll grow fine. I grew the Grande Hybrid last year and they were actually pretty similar to the Biker Billys. A little less hot, with very similar dimensions and meatiness. My only...

    Italian Hot Peppers

based on what you're describing, I don't think you'd be disappointed with the Ital Roaster. They're about the heat level of a mild Jalapeno, but with a different, more "neutral" taste. One of my favorite peppers, useful in a lot of different foods. One thing, though, this cultivar is very...

My grow list for 2011-- work in progress

thanks for the input, guys Potowie - would you consider any of the Anaheim-"like" peppers such as Anaheim TMR/Big Jim/Sandia/Joe E Parker/6.4 etc to be about the same taste except hotter, or is the Anaheim itself the one to grow?

chinense Opinion? -> Aji Habanero, Habanero De Arbol, Aji Crystal

cool....I'm going with the Aji Amarillo, Aji Cristal and Aji Habanero this year. Can't wait to get 'em growin'!

    Italian Hot Peppers

"Italian hot pepper" probably means Cubanelle. Cubanelle is one of a bunch of different kinds of peppers that could be generic Italian peppers at a farmer's market. A similar type would be the Anaheim, which is a bit hotter than a Cubanelle. Another hot Italian pepper would be the Italian...

chinense Opinion? -> Aji Habanero, Habanero De Arbol, Aji Crystal

Well, obviously I'm preparing my Peppermania order here, and the above three are calling out to me. Can anyone weigh in on what any of these three taste like, also how well they grow (prolific vs stingy etc). Thanks

    Heaviest Yielding Plants

Salsalady, I believe those may be Holland (Dutch) Reds. If not, they look about exactly the same as Holland Reds, in any event. The Holland is similar-tasting to a Cayenne but about half the heat and slightly thicker flesh. What do they taste like?

    Heaviest Yielding Plants

Aji Limon, seeds purchased from HSC. Absolutely insane. 324 pods from 2 plants in 2010. They grew to about 6 1/2 feet tall. Here's a pic.

annuum anybody have experience with the Jalapeno Gigante?

I see the Jalapeno Gigante is being sold this year at Burpee. Anyone have experience growing it, and an opinion on the taste? I have a weak spot for gigantic medium-hot or very-hot Jalapenos; hoping this one fits the bill to go with my Biker Bills, Grande Hybrids and Organic Jal Earlys.

seeds Seed Fail to Germinating Ratio

I have a lot of numbers on this. I count germination rates and time-to-germination for all my seedlings, the upshot of it is: - 0 for 5 after 4 weeks is not a good sign, IF your soil temperature is about 82 degrees and the humidity level is very high. IF the soil temperature is way different...

    shopping where to buy seeds

I buy seeds from 4 or 5 different places (all on the list), but thought it might be useful to note that the seeds I get from tomatogrowers.com have the highest germination rates, by a wide margin. Last year I had 98.7 % germination from tomatogrowers seeds, with the other vendors in the 75 to...

seeds Seed starting kits with heat mats & small grow lights

First, circling back to the original question about seedling starter kits, I've been using the Burpee Ultimate Seed Starter System for a couple of years, sold at burpee.com and also at Home Depot. It's kind of a piece of crap, in terms of construction quality and so forth, but it does do exactly...

harvesting My Oct 25, 2010 harvest.

I of course defer to your expertise in such matters! I think it *may* be that last year I got aji limon seeds that were incorrectly labeled lemon drops, because to my eye they look exactly the same and yet there are many here who say they are different. NorTex: exactly where I'm headed with...
