What peppers got your interest for next season?

If i had to pick two out of my grow that I have already started for 2015, I would choose:   Manzano x Habanero   and   Unknown pepper taken from Cuba 2 years ago - or "Mitchell's Cuban pepper" as I'm calling it. I believe it is a yellow Habanero type, but won't know for sure until it grows and...

    lighting Are these lights okay?

In my experience, color temp isn't super important with peppers - you just need to supply enough photosynthetically active radiation or PAR. In fact, I've had some plants that have actually preferred Metal Halide over High Pressure Sodium - with little to no difference in pod production...

pests A novel approach to aphids

Last year I didn't have enough of a predator population in my greenhouse to compensate for aphids or whiteflies, although this year It seems that a sizable spider population has formed, and they seem to be reproducing - and actually on my plants, not just in the window sills, etc.   However...

    Yellowing Cotyledons

I'm with everyone else, that yellowing of cotyledons generally means overwatering.   I use the domes until most of the seeds have popped, generally around 2 weeks from the day the seeds were planted, sometimes a week longer if I'm doing seeds that take a particularly long time to germinate...

    Bhut jolokia

They seem to be growing much faster than my Bhuts. My bhuts, are very, very slow - but that is to be expected with a 120 day var.   Here are my bhuts (center row) around 50 days after sprouting. The middle one grew extra huge leaves for some reason. My bhuts have slightly larger leaves that most...

    seeds Tabasco seeds frustrating me

I did around 10 varieties from baker creek just a few months ago, around 80-90% germination on all types - even the trinidad scorpion.   Tabasco seeds are pretty small, so you have to be careful when watering that they don't go too deep. Any small seed type pepper tends to be a bit more...

    Slade122's 2014 Greenhouse GLOG

We had a relatively beautiful weekend and a relatively decent bout of rain, which my yard greatly appreciated.   One of the mini-bell varieties, as well as the italian pepperoncini are starting to make their first flowers. For the pepperoncini, this is day 57 from sprout - so they appear to be...

    Slade122's 2014 Greenhouse GLOG

Just a small update today.   I'm hitting the mark as far as nutrients are concerned on my Tequila Sunrise. Getting some nice cracking on a few of the pods. The weight of the pod itself is also substantially greater than the ones I pulled off the plant earlier.   Also from my Tequila Sunrise...

    Superhot rankings?

+1  Agreed   Even the same plant won't produce the same heat peppers depending on a wide variety of factors, such as the climate, amount of water supplied, nutrients, etc. Growing any kind of pepper you are likely to find that some are only half as hot as others - even produced at the same time...

    Slade122's 2014 Greenhouse GLOG

Thanks! My goal is to have production (at least flowers) starting in December/January for the 60-80 day varieties. And then it will likely be late in January or February before I get some of the 90-120 day varieties to flower.   These guys will all be grown in pots for the duration of their...

    Devv's 2014- Stick a fork in me, I'm done....

I've been to lockhart several times, mainly for the grub.   Let me tell you, I'm drooling just thinking about all that succulent, juicy meat.... If you've never been there - It's like church, but for BBQ.   Probably the most religious eating experience one can have.   *moaning ensues*

To the pros - if you were to give your best advice on first time growers what would it be ?

Start with twice as many seeds so you can choose your champions as well. Not all seedlings are created equal.

    What is this sticky puff?

Thanks Mr. Hill, Good to know.   With gardening, it seems that you never stop learning. That's what I love about it.

    What is this sticky puff?

Thanks guys. Glad I waited to get some opinions before I bombed it.   As long as they don't turn out to be Brown Recluses, I'll happily let them take care of my bug population and make their home in my artificially created environment.   I actually prefer for spiders to be in the greenhouse, and...

    2 month old sprouts?

Yes, they should be larger. Considerably larger at that, of course some of it is varietal dependant - but even my tepin is larger than all of yours after less than two months, and it is by far my slowest plant that germinated at the same time as the rest.   My first set are coming up on 2...
