I add diatomaceous earth to my container mix just to be sure it's (silica) in there. I think it makes for a sturdier plant that can withstand high winds and hard rains better. I have no scientific data to back this up.

I have only one plant of the C. pubescens species growing this year. I know it won't cross pollinate with other species but can it self pollinate? I was told it needs a fellow plant to make any fruit. 

Sometimes the aperture that the root first comes out of looks like it is open. If they haven't sprouted yet they will be fine. Yes a picture would be good for sure. Were they wet or damp?

I always add a little bat guano into my container soil to boost micro nutrients. I think it's a great idea, but wouldn't bother with making a tea. For a garden plot, I agree, it would be too expensive.

I find soaking seeds (plain old water) for at least 12 hours or overnight helps, also planting just a little deeper reduces the problem. Maybe next year give it a try. A small sprinkle of worm castings worked into your starting medium should be fine. Any more than that and you are asking for fungus problems for sure.

Safer's soap or equivalent ( potassium salts of fatty acids) Low toxicity and soil half life of less than a day.
