Critters in my Peppers (Southern California)

110 pepper plants!  Would luv to see the list of what you're growing.  I chose 16 varieties with 42 total plants.  I mostly chose them for appearance and color, wanting to cover all shapes and colors of red, yellow, orange, brown, green and white.  See image.

Critters in my Peppers (Southern California)

Friend, no man writes such about his wife unless it's mostly tongue-in-cheek.  I've been married to my bride for 32 years and at age 57 she's still the prettiest, sweetest gal I know.  She makes "rude" comments like that with a smack to my bottom and a kiss on the cheek.   Tomatoes are next...

Critters in my Peppers (Southern California)

I'm worse off than you.  I have 42 plants in 13 containers, I outdid myself this year.  A glutton for punishment.  And boy did I hear about it from the better half.  You can already imagine what she says about the critter in my garden.    "So what if you lose a few plants you have waaay too...

Critters in my Peppers (Southern California)

So I buttoned up the green mesh pretty tight tonight after dinner.  It will take some real effort for a coon to get in.  If it's a squirrel, I expect it won't stop him, he'll just climb over.   I've ordered a motion detecting strobe light and a game camera.  So within a couple days I ought to...

Critters in my Peppers (Southern California)

I hear ya.  My wife opposes it.  So I'm trying to figure out another approach.  First step is a game cam and some easy steps like a squirrel trap.

Critters in my Peppers (Southern California)

A couple more questions.  See photo below.  For two years I've used this green mesh barrier and it seemed to work just fine.  So can I assume that the squirrels can just climb it?    Also, last night a critter did some major damage to a number of plants.  It had lifted up the bottom of that...

Critters in my Peppers (Southern California)

Great idea!   I need to do something immediately, the little sh-t just trampled the hell out of my stuff last night.  Almost destroyed one plant and damaged a few more.   So you just drape the Deer X netting over the tops of the plants?  Or did you run it vertically between posts?   In fact...

Critters in my Peppers (Southern California)

Good idea!  Can you save me some time and tell me where you got the fence from?

Here they come, Edmick! Put out the nets!

If they're illegal aphids, California (my home state) will give them drivers licenses and free college tuition, register them to vote at the local DMV, elect them to the California Assembly, and admit them to the California Bar.

Nibbling on my Habaneros (Southern California)

Hornworms are not out yet, but will be soon.  They are not so choosy out here, they will strip a plant clean.    I was curious because it was only happening at the top of my plant, and only the habaneros.

Nibbling on my Habaneros (Southern California)

My habaneros are growing well given how cool and overcast the spring and early summer has been here in SoCal.   I've noticed, however, that the tops of my habanero plants seem to have been nibbled on.  The lower leaves and buds are fine, but just the tops of the plants look to have been eaten or...

Critters in my Peppers (Southern California)

A stem was broken just last night.  Here is the picture.

See below for photos of the holes.  Do they look like squirrels to you?

Started plants off in poor quality mix, unsure of how to transplant.

I had the same problem, I bought the cheapest potting soil at Home Depot, the Kellogg raised bed brand.  After two months some of my plants were stunted and yellow.  Kellogg soil is mostly tree bark!   Worthless.   Repotted about 20 plants to the only potting soil they had that wasn't bark...

    Judge my Carolina Reapers

Did you start that plant from a 4" seedling?  What month?  I'm envious, I won't be getting any of the megahots until July or August out here in cool California.

Critters in my Peppers (Southern California)

I planted my peppers in April and they are mostly doing well. It's my third season so I'm still a rookie.  I planted 13 above ground half barrels with about 40 plants of all types.  They are surrounded by a green mesh barrier that keeps my dogs and the rabbits out.   The last couple weeks I've...

    Help Diagnosing Problems

OK, another question if I may.  The grower recommended both liquid and dry fertilizer;  the liquid applied for the first three weeks, then monthly; and the granular applied every 6-8 weeks.  Do you agree with this?   Also I purchased locally Kellogg liquid fish and kelp (2-2-2) and Nature's Care...

    Help Diagnosing Problems

Clarifying points.  Some of the plants are hardy and robust, should I leave them alone?   How deep should I dig for the ailing plants?  They all game in standard 4" or 5" plastic containers.  Should I go down 6", 7", or another level?

    Help Diagnosing Problems

What can I do to salvage this growing season?  Can I add anything to the fertilizing schedule that will make it work?  Or should I just transplant the ones that look piqued into new soil?
