How r ur peppers going in Perth west oz?

The stormy week has coincided with some pods turning:       Might take one into work for the guys to try out.  Hope they are hot as hell!

disease-pests Hydro advice needed: DWC vs. Ebb and Flow/Hydroton vs. Rockwool

Juice404 - interesting read, especially all the exotic peppers you have been finding on your travels!  I also like seeing peoples DIY set-ups and might try your two stacked tote idea next year.   I hear what you mean regarding the pump noise - that would drive me nuts after a while.  I can hear...

tutorial Beginner's guide to AACT/Compost Tea

Not sure about the pump tbh, but the plants look good still and didn't die so one can only hope there were some goodies in there for them.  I will try more carbs next time and will try to remember to look at the pump specs too

indoor-growing 5 gallon bucket DWC - indoor or outdoor?

I'm doing outdoor DWC, struggling with keeping the water cool. Actually, I'm not struggling, I flat out cant.      I've wrapped mylar, but when your weather is regularly 35C+ each day...   Go for indoors if you can afford the electricity for the lights would be my advice.

tutorial Beginner's guide to AACT/Compost Tea

Just did a worm castings tea. No foam after 24 hrs, just brown water.  I suspect my air pump wasn't powerful enough, but there wasn't a really bad odor, so I've used it anyway.   We have a 39C day coming up, so I got the soil nicely moist with the tea in hope any goodies will readily get taken...

disease-pests Hydro advice needed: DWC vs. Ebb and Flow/Hydroton vs. Rockwool

So I wish I took a photo of the initial transplanted plants that went from soil to DWC and Ebb/Flow, so you could see the differences.   What I'm noticing is DWC seems to be really good for stimulating massive root growth phase very quickly, followed by a growth spurt phase whereas Ebb/Flow...

How r ur peppers going in Perth west oz?

Thanks, I've put a fair bit of work into it tbh.  I had to cut a hold in the side of the garage (saw through metal) to run the tubing into there as I wanted the reservoir out of the heat and it gives me a place to work on my nutrient blends, pH balancing etc.     Your gigantic Aji Largo plant...

How r ur peppers going in Perth west oz?

Having a surprisingly good time of growing this year.  The plants I thought I'd lost during the 40+ heat the other week are now in hydro and bouncing back very strongly.  It was working so well that I built some more ebb/flow modules and retired the Mark 1 system I built as a trial. Here's a pic...

misc Hydroponic productivity question and pepper ID if possible

Cool - that's ok then as mine are outside hydros.  I'm hoping my tomato is just expanding roots into the bucket at the moment and I'll see an explosion of growth soon.

misc Hydroponic productivity question and pepper ID if possible

I have a tomato plant and 5 peppers running in my ebb/flow set-up which is running off one reservoir. Why do you say it was not a good idea to add the tomato? Is it because the tomato is not growing so fast? I ask because mine is still on the small side and I was thinking I may have made the...

disease-pests Can anyone identify these spots

I have that on two of my plants that are in separate pots. and they have never been touched one after the other by me.  I assumed it was something in the potting soil (bacterial) as they used the same bag of potting soil (Debco Organic Mix).   For what its worth, one plant is still growing...

Robisburning - have you checked your water departments stance on chlorine / chloramine?  They dont always use both I believe. For example, the Water Corporation where I live only uses chlorine for Perth metro areas. Chloramine gets used more in the country areas.     We use a Vitamin C filter on...

disease-pests Hydro advice needed: DWC vs. Ebb and Flow/Hydroton vs. Rockwool

Ah gotcha.  I didn't realize the bottom will get "mucky" and that a full flush will clean it all out.   Thanks for the clarification and also for tip about rinsing the roots a little too.    I will mostly be transplanting to hydro from soil, so I have similar issues regarding roots below the net...

disease-pests Hydro advice needed: DWC vs. Ebb and Flow/Hydroton vs. Rockwool

I'm a little confused I thought running a DWC with water constituted a flush. yet you refer it as a semi and then a full flush after a couple of cycles.   Would you mind clarifying the terms - sorry for the noob question.

How r ur peppers going in Perth west oz?

Yesterdays 44C day too a small toll on my vegie garden.  Lost a couple of chilies and lots of peas :(  A couple of other chilies took a beating, but survived (just) I'm going to move into hydro to see if I can get them to recover quickly.   On a plus side, my first Aji Limon pod turned yellow...

disease-pests Hydro advice needed: DWC vs. Ebb and Flow/Hydroton vs. Rockwool

My hydro is outdoors in hydroton .  The price of electricity in Western Australia is pretty high (25c/kWh) and we have a long season with about 9 months of sun, so seemed a natural choice.  We just had a 44C day that I was not prepared for and I lost a few vegies... some chilies took a beating...

disease-pests Hydro advice needed: DWC vs. Ebb and Flow/Hydroton vs. Rockwool

First season hydro for me here.  I'm trialing both systems you mentioned.  So far the DWC is producing much more plant vegetative growth over the ebb/flow (mine are still seedlings).   Its not a true comparison as I'm using three different peppers in the three systems (1 x DWC and 2 x E/F).  ...

So i just recently switched to hydro.......help :p

I've done the same recently (i'm a first time hydro too). Moved three plants from soil to hydro.  One bhut in DWC and a hab and a fatalli in a modified dutch bucket kinda set-up.    I adjusted pH and got the ppm in the 400-600 range and my plants looked similar to yours for about a week.  Saw...

    container-growing "Raised" container growing

+1 This.  I can testify to the pain in the ass of roots overheating in pots.  I've tried all sorts and found not much seems to work particularly effectively.  If anyone has a magic method I'd be very keen to know it.

That video was really interesting.  Growing in leaves only with a few inches of soil on top... will give that a try for sure.
