Speaking of cowpeas... As I said earlier, the weather has been pretty extreme so far this year. The excessive heat and humidity has caused a lot of flower drop, but the Whippoorwill cowpea is starting to power through it and set pods. There should be plenty of time for a harvest.

Also picked our first tomatoes of the season the other day. They're already long gone. Made a fresh salsa and ate the whole bowl in one sitting lol. Nothing like homegrown tomatoes. Stupice, Bloody Butcher

French Gold (p. Vulgaris) This is a new-to-me yellow pole bean that has produced surprisingly well, especially given this years' challenging weather conditions. It has been terribly hot (90+), humid (Heat index 100+), and little rain. Further, this variety has been attacked brutally by Mexican...

    Downriver 2022 - Pepper Time

Well, I was finally able to pick a few pods the other day - first of the season. Hopefully there's a lot more to come. Torres Catywampus (de Arbol type from Jalisco), TepinxLemon Drop (round pheno) Antonia P Rhomedia, TepinxLemon Drop (bullet pheno), Naga J XL cross, Dangler's Ghost

What do you eat??! A year in the life of a pescatarian 2022

@peppersproutfarm I LOVE shrimp! Unfortunately, I developed a severe allergic reaction to them (and anything that swims backwards) when I was 22. I recently heard-tell of plant-based "seafood". The shrimp in your dish above look like the real deal, but I was wondering if you have seen...

off-topic Good Mornin' Thread - For those that get up really early and post

It's sunny and 71, on its way to 88 (rf 96). Very humid again today. We didn't see any thunderstorms yesterday, but the weather guessers are calling for them again this afternoon. Not much planned for today, just chillin and maybe watch some golf. Hope everybody has a restful Sunday. Good Morning!

Good morning. It's cloudy and 69, on its way to 86 (rf 96). Two or three thunderstorms rumbled through overnight with a couple more forecast for this afternoon. Always happy to get some rain. Not sure what's on the plate for today, but chillin is high on MY list lol. Have a great Friday everybody!

Well, another heatwave begins. It's currently sunny and 65, on its way to 88 (rf 95). Forecast is short and not so sweet: "Mostly sunny and humid". Got most of the grass cut yesterday. Kabota still cutting fine. Still need to weedwhack at some point, but I think a trip to the garden is becoming...

Tomatillos are doing great in the heat. These are called Amarylla, a yellow variety. First year growing tomatillos, so it's kind of a learning experience. Anyway, I was looking at the one on the ground and noticed something else. See it? ...look closer Yup, Hornworm. This is one of the...

    Downriver 2022 - Garden Adventures

Speaking of beans, some are handling the heat better than others. Most are experiencing flower drop and not setting pods. The exception to that seems to be French Gold, which is a yellow (wax) pole bean. It is setting pods, regardless of temperature. Unfortunately, they also seem to be the...

Yes, different species, combined with varietal separation. Lima, runner, cowpea and snap. Some are more promiscuous than others, with Limas being the worst. I only plant ONE lima every year.

    Downriver 2022 - Pepper Time

Well, it looks like I haven't updated this thread lately, but there's not really a lot to say. Pepper plants continue to grow, but the heat and humidity has taken its' toll. I know some folks say peppers LOVE heat, but I'm not so sure. When constantly in the 90's with the heat index over a 100...

    hot-sauce Whatcha gonna do?

Truth be told, I always ask for the "house" sauce. In fact, I go there so often, the wait staff automatically brings us a bowl of it, along with two frozen margaritas, before they even wait on us lol. But I do use the bottled stuff as well.
